Tool Tip Tuesdays! New Video Series!

translation services

Firestorm has so many features and functions most folks don’t even know about that we decided to do a series of short videos showcasing a hidden or lesser-known feature once a week. Starting today, and every Tuesday after, we will have a new video showing off something cool! This first video covers camera functionality that might be new to you!

Did you know you can alter your default camera follow position with just your Shift and Ctrl keys? You don’t even need to open preferences!

  • OMG i love the ctr+the wheel tip, i’ve been hating that high hight camera position like forever. shift+ESC also loved as it will set it back to default when i need the higher view

  • Pretty cool vid Jess. Didn’t know about the SHIFT+arrow to walk sideways of the CTRL+0 to zoom. Great tip for building with tiny prims! Thanks!

  • Great video Jessica learned a lot of good tips there.
Also the idea of weekly video tips is a great idea, I try to get to classes when I can but not always possible with my world location and real life.
Thank you and keep them coming 🙂

  • As a person with a physical disability who types on an adaptive keyboard using a stick I hold in my mouth, I rely heavily on keyboard commands to use SL and control many features. Thanks for these tools, the tips and the classes! I find them all very helpful!

  • THANK YOU JESSICA! Great video; I learned stuff, too. **
A little addition to the use of Ctrl-0 to zoom in: this is a true zoom, the kind of change you get with a zoom lens on a RL camera. (Your mousewheel actually does what the TV world calls a DOLLY–it physically moves the camera but doesn’t change the focal length of the lens.) This is important because any pro photographer will shoot portraits by STANDING BACK and ZOOMING IN. Doing this avoids the “fisheye” look that you see in so many RL and SL photos; you look bug-eyed and your nose is big. So try that–back up your camera with the mousewheel and then use Ctrl-0 to zoom in. See how much better it looks!
WARNING: the Ctrl-0/Ctrl-8 setting does NOT reset, even if you log off. Make sure you always reset using Ctrl-9 when you’re done. I have an example on my Website; scroll to the bottom of this page:

  • Okay, okay…. apparently you shouldn’t trust you know it all when you’re in SL for over 6 years and used Phoenix/FS since their early days 😉
I learned a lot from this vid and I wish I had known them before!! And I really like that the vids (watched the 2nd one, too) are short, crisp and clear.
Great initiative and I will be a Tool Tip Tuesday addict from now on!

Thanks FS team and Jessica in particular!
