  • The installer shows a button called “options”. There you will find the option to choose the folder you want to install to. And I managed to say that without calling anyone names or using obscenities.

  • I just spent the time doing the clean reinstall as outlined by your document, I then reinstalled the Firestorm viewer and now it crashes before I can sign in. It says hardware appears to be frozen.

  • Manually clear your cache. . Which, had you followed the instructions outlined properly you would have already done that. Manually wipe your cache and you’ll be fine.

  • Installed the X64 (a clean install) and sadly it caused me to crash. Opening IM’s from the pie menu or the preferences took more than a frozen 30 seconds. I uninstalled and did a clean install of the 32 bit.- Exactly the same problems. I’ve gone back to the last release. Am stable again.

  • Firestorm x64 installed perfectly for me. I did however do as the FS Team say you should and did a totally clean install.

    As some users missed the ‘Options’ button it seems worth reminding those using Windows OS there are THREE versions of the current release –

    * Firestorm for SL 32bit – NOTE this is 32 bit;
    * Firestorm for SL & Opensim 32bit – NOTE this is 32 bit; and
    * Firestorm for SL & Opensim 64bit – NOTE this is 64 bit

    I suggest people check they in fact do have a 64 bit system if they are installing the 64 bit release as trying to run it on a 32 bit system will cause problems.

  • Now, with *materials* included, we have the possibility to use normal maps and specular maps. Specular map are responsible for the shininess of any material. The good thing with it is you can make parts of an object shiny and other parts not just with one texture. For excample a Corduroy Jacket wouldn’t shine but maybe it’s buttons or zipper. You can create a texture for this effect and put it into specular map of the object:
    edit / textures / right beside materials you will find another button which shows *Texture (diffuse)* as default. Click at it and it will open and show you two more possibilities: Bumbiness (normal) and Shininess (specular). Normal maps are like bumpmaps and specular maps are for the shininess of an object.
    Watch this video for excample:
    If you want to make the whole object shiny, you just need to insert a fully white texture: Shininess (specular), then click at the texture area which shows a big X as default. Texture window opens, now click at blank and you will get a fully white area.
    In shininess full white is full shiney and black is dull. Grays between black and white are shining more the closer they are to white (of course).
    Use also the glossiness factor for more or less effect to get more possibilities for your material (whatever it should be… metal, glass and so on).

  • To date Firestorm x64 ( Firestorm for SL & Opensim 64bit ) is the best TPV I have used. Unfortunately it seems this isn’t the same for everyone however if people, myself included, are going to post extremely negative or positive comments I think it would help everyone if the information on out computer systems that can be found under Help/About Firestorm was also posted as it may show some common link between a glitch and some part of the computer specs.

  • I am getting flickering on my screen especially when I use menus. I have had advice from FS Support in world but the problem still exists. It is very distracting and painful on the eyes.

    I have cleared caches and re-installed on a number of occasions.
    Also made several adjustments to my prefrences as recommended by FS Support.

    No, no, no, no …. little new brings this new release 🙁
    Always the same game, overcrowd with new (more or less useful) features, and nearly no changes in support of modern hardware.

    We should not think that 64 bit is in the package just because that says the colorful plate. 🙁 No, error …. it’s the same code of the 32 bit version, only compiled differently.

    “Mogelpackung” (bluff package) we call something like this in Germany. And that is why I ask shamelessly:

    “When we get the full hardware support for 64 bit systems, when we can use more than 512 MB of graphic memory for example?”

    Because my experience shows clearly that an increase in the usable texture memory by only 50% can eliminate old problems with textures, especially blured textures in AMD systems (tested in older FS version per Debug Console).

    But no, we get materials instead in the last version.
    We do not even have an LSL command to set material properties by scripts, but we get materials. *ditsch*

    Of course, it look nice and I like to use it more and more, but it stressed out the previously busy hardware even more, and if a building used marginally more that 5 textures for example in SL, then overflows the reserved memory. What is this nonsense?

    Anyone can test this in Vyatka or Angle Manor by using the texture console.

    And yes, we know the texure memory limit it is a soft limit, yes we can read the KB, but unfortunately does not soft enough for a modern 64bit system and grafic card.

    And it would be so easy to determine the available OS and main memory and grafic memory of everyone’s computer, and then adjust this limit in the instalation process, according to the encountered environment.

    And therefore at the moment, is to name the development in my eyes partially “without concept” … grandstanding to keep the graphic spoiled children with minimal efforts. That’s all.

    Not so good as expected, but still always the best viewer I know at the moment.

  • Nothing has been fixed, all they did was add a few useless features that we do not care. Mesh rendering and other contents are still broken, the asset blacklist works 50% of the time plus a frame rate issue non-fixed since 4.4.0.

    I am glad I successfully tweaked the Firestorm 4.4.0 to be able to run it since Jira completely blocked everything past 4.4.3. That is their best version so far, I have no render issue at all, nor performance issues. I am going to stick with it forever I believe.

  • Ok, so I feel a little silly. Apparently somewhere in the past I forgot there was a folder in Aps/local as well as Apps/roaming that needed to be purged for a clean install. Amazingly enough, after doing a complete wipe of everything including that and re-installing, the 20 minute march to crash issue I’d been having went away. It remained stable for a good long RP session last night. How it does when there’s a lot of sim crossings involved remains to be tested. FS still uses significantly more memory in a given location than the LL viewer and I expect that will mean even at the best I’ll still have to continue to choose which viewer based on what I’m doing inworld.

  • The new viewer works great so far, I like the new features. The shaking viewer when the region is about to restart definitely gets your attention! I wanted to submit a request for a new feature but couldn’t find where we could or if we even can. I would LOVE to be able to search by year in filters, I try and try to clean my inventory but being in SL for so many years and having a large inventory makes finding old items that you will never use again very difficult. This feature would be sooo useful! Thanks for all the good work Phoenix/Firestorm team!

  • I’ve gotten to kick the tires a little on this version. As expected, the HTTP code that was included has made a noticeable difference on rezzing speed and frame rate. Memory leakage seems to be pretty well under control with memory use actually going down when I end up in an area and staying for a while. Whether it’s dumping stuff to cache faster or just dumping it, I don’t know or really care. It matters on my system with it’s 3Gig of ram.

    The new way contact sets are done makes it usable finally. Thanks for dumping that annoying Rolodex thing. I do have a feature/change request to submit for that which I’ll submit on the Jira. I’d like it to default to the last set used when adding new people rather than going to the first one alphabetically. Would be faster to set up new sets that way.

    The one piece piece of fitted mesh clothing I have seems to work. I’ve not been in a huge hurry to buy mesh clothing as I use a non-human AV most of the time and mesh has simply not worked for me in the past very well. I wish LL would figure out how to make clothing layer work on mesh AV’s but I suppose they don’t have a lot of incentive there. I will concede that well done mesh clothing looks better, but it’s far easier to create a usable clothing layer set.

    I know you all love adding new features, but LL seems to be focusing on some major viewer performance code lately and that needs to take precedence over new features when it comes to getting releases out. Improvements to the SSA code and interest list handling are coming up at some point soon. For me, a faster, better rendering world is far more important than any new clicky toys as far as my user experience.

  • Issues encountered with latest version on MAC OS 10+:

    – repeated loss of rezzed items on my land. several items keep dissapearing, by several vendors, not just one, both scripted and unscripted. different ones each time. they do not return to lost and found but are gone. fortunately so far it is copy ones, but it is a pain to set out items again every couple of days.

    – repeated rezzing issues of both clothing and body parts. both with full or empty cache.

  • I downloaded the proof of concept viewer, i like it, but you have a ways to go before calling it ready for release. One thing is you have no way of chatting anywhere but group chat. the group chat options are not working. secondly when editing objects it wount let you edit a linked build, each time you click and object to edit, it also moves the edit window back on to the screen. small bugs, but looke to be a great idea.
