Server Side Appearance goes grid wide!

Server Side Appearance (SSA) Rolls grid wide starting Tuesday!

Linden Lab will begin updating main channel regions with SSA starting Tuesday morning, and this will progress throughout the day. Then on Wednesday the remaining regions will also update with SSA. By Wednesday night Server Side Appearance will be grid wide.
See the LL blog post here http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Featured-News/Project-Sunshine-Goes-Grid-Wide/ba-p/2148427

Don’t know what SSA is?

In layman’s terms, LL is improving the way avatars render and, if you are not on a viewer that supports it (SSA), you will be gray to others and they will be gray to you. Our latest Firestorm release 4.4.2 supports SSA, get on it!

Seeing gray people?

Rough estimates suggest there are about 70,000 users still on various viewers that do not support this new code! If you are one of those people, starting Tuesday you will see more and more gray people, and make no mistake… you will be gray to them as well.

No support for gray people!

Please… do not come asking for support because you are gray. With all the efforts we have made, LL has made and the Blogosphere has made to inform users of this upcoming change going back months, there should be no excuse for you to not have known this was coming. Anyone not on a SSA viewer is there by choice and you are on your own. On the bright side, you’ll save money on clothing since no one will see them on you anyway.

Supported Firestorm Versions are…

Currently Firestorm 4.4.0 partially supports SSA and Firestorm 4.4.2 fully supports SSA. Those are the only two versions we provide support for now. Get yourself on Firestorm 4.4.2 first, and if you are still having problems THEN come for help.

Please update to a Server Side Appearance capable viewer now!

  • I especially liked the comment about the clothing budget. I started telling friends of mine about this a year ago last march and people responded to me like i was an alien or was trying to predict doomsday, now we stand upon it’s eve.

My hats off to you and your team for going the extra mile, keeping us informed and putting the information out there for those that wanted to accept it. tonight eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow will be the cold day in hell for the last of the old viewer users still hanging on to whatever they are running for whatever reason they think they need to be and speaking as a former rl csr for several electronic firms i feel your pain already.

And for those of you reading this if you havent been following along, if you remember the story of the grasshopper and the ants, you don’t want to be a grasshopper tomorrow, especially a grey one. Find a viewer of your liking even if not this one, but this one works especially well-MAKE SURE IT SUPPORTS SSA-remove every last piece of your old viewer and all other viewers you have ever tried even if only for a few minutes-no matter how old your computer is- the cleaner your system before you install the new one the better off the new one will be-make sure your drivers and all other operating system components are as up to date as possible, then install the new viewer–then come join the rest of us ants that have already made it–we have been waiting for you.

This is the next step of eveolution for the virtual communities and if you really grasp this, then you will understand that 10 years is only a fraction of what we will see in the future– there will be more improvements and upgrades in years to come, just as the horse and buggy has evolved into the cars we have today, you can either say “ok stop ive had enough” and climb back on your horse, or embrace it and come along and make history, but if you choose to stay where you are, don’t complain to these folks because nothing works right anymore or linden labs either for that matter. The electronics have advanced dramatically in the past decade so the software MUST follow. Evolution is a fact of any life, and has been here since before mankind. The time is now, the next step of the future is here.

Jessica and the crew, job well done–remember, you can only help those that help themselves……

  • Hi Jessica

Could you please try to avoid relative time indications like:
    - “… starting Tuesday …”
    - “… now available …”

    Use something like
    - “… starting Tuesday 20-Aug …”
    - “… available today 1-April-2013 …”

This will make the blog simpler to read. I reinstalled 4.4.2.34167 twice due to looking at your blog entry 1 1/2 month after I had installed it. Well, silly me – but easily avoidable.

  • It’s not the viewers.

In my home location, the official LL viewer gives me about 150 fps on Ultra. FS 4.4.2 goes by the 200 fps mark like it’s standing still. My computer is nothing out of the ordinary. PC, and Video card from the shelf at Best Buy.

I tried the test again with another computer. This one came with XP pre-installed, for reference on its age. Wow… The viewers SUCK! What’s up with this? 6 fps?

Or maybe it’s not the viewers after all….

In the tech world, you are either progressing, or you are going extinct.

  • I can’t see any reason for anyone to remain in the grey zone (using a non-SSA viewer). If anyone is using a computer so old that it can’t handle the graphics in SL, perhaps they should consider upgrading. SL recommended minimum specs are well within reasonable-priced new (or second-hand) computers. It’s about time that SL moved out of the ’90′s and into the 21st century. Had Microsoft, Linux and Mac developers stalled progress to cater for people who were still using Sinclair Z80 computers, we would still be playing text games and pong instead of the fantastic array of graphically intense games we have today.

I was going to suggest that those who don’t want to upgrade simply use a mesh avatar, but they are not able to do that since pre-SSA viewers don’t fully support mesh either. Maybe they could make prim robot avatars or use one of the old ones that were given away at SLB10. Some are quite cool. We will still be grey to them, though.

I, for one, really appreciate the vast amount of effort and time put in by the Firestorm development team in implementing mesh and SSA, as well as doing your best to cater for Phoenix stalwarts like me, and think you all deserve medals for putting up with some of the negativity and trepidation that some users have felt during the change over. I hate change for change sake, but this is change for the better with good reasons for it, I think.

  • I’m with you there. Our relationship with SL is probably always going to be a rough one but I’ve been a (mostly!) happy and trusting user of Firestorm for years. Jessica and her team do a fantastic job. I didn’t update to 4.4.2 until probably a month, or was it two months ago? But I wanted to hear it from Jessica that it was time and I *knew* she’d tell us, and she did. I went ahead and updated to the most recent one. It’s surprising how well it runs. It’s running smoother than any version I’ve used preceeding it. I thought my lag was PC related but no, it’s gone with 4.4.2 and SL is running nearly flawlessly. So if you’re worried about lag on older versions guys, update and see if it helps you.

    August 21, 2013

  • ‘course, s’been awhile since I’ve had to do a full/clean install too, that might’a helped admitably. Heh heh. But I’d still give credit to 4.4.2 just because it’s doing a great job so far.

  • just wanted to say that forcing ppl to use a viewer they don’t want is kind of crappy in my opinion….now i would understand if we was paying to use viewers, but we are not paying so we should still have the choice of viewer that we would want without having the gray ppl issue…….get my drift? firestorm crashes to much and makes the ppl i know, computers get hot and over heat….causing the crash i mentioned above…just saying, kinda crappy LL!!!!

    Derp

    August 20, 2013

  • No one is forcing you to use any viewer. If you don’t like Firestorm, find another viewer, it’s really not difficult.

    Tracy RedAngel

    August 21, 2013

  • I think you have things a bit backwards. If we were paying, we might feel we have the right to demand what we want. But we don’t pay for the viewers, and most don’t even pay for the service (SL).

I think you wold do well to read some of the other comments. As said before by others, progress and evolution are a fact of life. If the hardware cannot run the software, it’s time to upgrade the hardware.

LL did not code anything to cause the “gray ppl” (people?) issue. It is not their failure. It’s the failure of those who have not kept up with the technology.

I suspect that your argument is pretty well rooted in history though. No doubt, as the sun was setting, two dinosaurs looked out over the sea and one said to the other, “You know, forcing us to evolve is kinda crappy.”

As JL stated – We have all known this was coming – for a very long time. Even my phone app can handle SSA and mesh. And 4.4.2 is the fastest, least demanding viewer I have ever run.

I would be willing to bet that the majority of people claiming that the new viewers don’t work, have never even tried them. Yes, they are different. Yes, you will have to learn new things. Don’t be scared – learning doesn’t hurt a bit.

    Gryphon

    August 21, 2013

  • Oh, for fuck’s sake… First of all, no one “forces” you to use Firestorm or ANY other viewer, as was pointed to you previously. Don’t like Firestorm? Use Kokua. Use Singularity. Use the CoolVL viewer. Use the official viewer, whatever. Come to think of it, no one forces you to be in SL in the first place!

Second, if you still see grey avatars around you, then it’s down to three possible causes: (1) your insistence on using an obsolete viewer, (2) their insistence on using obsolete viewers or (3) you’re in a very crowded and very laggy area (i.e. an area where there are lots of avatars, the builds and the avatars themselves are littered with idiotically high-resolution textures, and the avatars have so many scripts on them that they’re walking lag factories). In that case, it’s not SSA or Firestorm that is to blame, it’s the users that hog the servers and the network down with what they choose to plaster on themselves.

As for your “FS makes my computer overheat, crash etc”, this is all BAWWWWW and no one in their right mind would take it seriously. Personally, I use Firestorm on Linux and it takes the laggiest of regions and the most intense of GPU crash attacks to make it crash. Then again, I said one magic word: I’m on Linux, whereas you are most likely on Windoze; well, that’s your problem and certainly not mine. Also, you’re not telling us what the condition of your machine is. If it’s a computer with marginal memory and tons of stuff running at the same time (any antivirus software on Windoze hogs your machine down by using at least 20% of its CPU and at least 25% of its RAM while idle) – from useful applications to “performance-enhancing” spamware/scamware/spyware/malware, then it’s your problem. Sort your machine out, and then complain.

    But I digress…

  • As a user from the days of emerald and the original LL V1 viewer, I was happy when phoenix came along, though was a nightmare when I was DJ’ing, phoenx crashed almost every 5 mins.

LL V1 and V2 were worse stil..

Phoenix crashed me so badly and so often I had to try LL V2 Beta.

The came along Firestorms very first preview version.

Even with most of the stuff in it broken, it still was better than phoenix for me, and it was stable, kept me logged in 24-7 almost.

And I have used it ever since.

So get off ya high horse, as others have said, if ya dont like FS then hit the road, go try something else, because for most of us FS is a far superior viewer and far more stable too.

    Firestorm forever. :)

  • Server Side Baking, supposed to be another feather in SL’s hat…. A hat that has no feathers in it… Another project that is supposed to be for the good of SL, and will flop and fail like the rest in the end, it will do more harm then good, and SL will again experience a mass decline in users, who have been run off by dumb ideas and projects… Let’s see past projects, seperating the Adult Content was a mass failure, Pathfinder is something I know of noone who has used or needed, and now Server Side Baking…. SL needs to put their priorities infront of them, instead of just fracking over us users… We have been talking about mesh this and mesh that long enough, SL should have it implented fully where it can be used fully, the mesh deformer should be done and inworld by now, and SL sits and messes with stupid crap like what they do…. They don’t get their heads out of their rear ends, SL will be the third rate virtual world, and Inworldz and Avination will have caught up and passed SL by…..

    Az

  • Az!
i do know how you feel! I have been in SL more than 5 years. But remember that this blog is a Firestorm blog and don’t blame the Firestorm team for wot Linden Lab is doing. In my opinionf the Firestorm team do a grait work. And a last sigh: be kind!

    Freja String

    August 22, 2013

  • Look at all of this from Lab’s point of view. You can’t apply new technologies and projects properly if you know, that half of the people in the environement you host are using old version of application, unable to adapt them (media on a prim, mesh, materials etc. or other “projects with priority”). They’ve decided to introduce new technology, and it will do more good, than bad, actually – now viewers are not downloading all layers separately and broadcasting them to region, after putting them together (sometimes not fully successfully) using your own CPU and bandwidth (not to mention LL’s bandwidth), but just asking baking server to do these remotely for them… they’re receiving final clothing as everyone else in the region. This is a huge leap under the hood – the only drawback is the fact, than non-compatible V1 viewers are just showing gray people… but users on them were warned about this kind of things coming since… 2011? Enough time to get some decent hardware, even if not the high-tech one, and at least try to adapt to a V3 viewer (Firestorm has even Phoenix mode for easing transition).

Plus… you’re not using pathfinding or your friends are not using them, but – for example – for roleplay regions it’s quite nice addition: think about flee and chase functions used by dangerous animals in the medievial forest – they’ll walk around in a more realistic way. Scripters are not forced to use it, but it’s useful gate in the fence – the option is just there.

  • Don’t ask me how but any time I see SSA come up in open chats, or I mention it to someone in IMs (strangers, not friends) — they react with shock and confusion, and ask: “whats SSA???” So I don’t know how they’re missing it but they are. So, I’m sure to spite everyone’s efforts to tell them, there’s gonna be alot of “WTFS?!” when and if SSA ever goes live. (They’ve still been claiming this for quite some time and it apparently hasn’t happened yet.)
Lots of newbies have no clue what it is either but then, they mostly just joined and are using a brand new version of SLV or FS anyway.
I dunno how people are missing the login warnings. Willful ignorance FTW?

    Cain

    August 21, 2013

  • The login page may take up to some seconds to load for various users, depending on several factors. Sometimes it doesn’t load at all. So there are people who click the login button directly, without watching the screen at all. Other users don’t look at it anyway, because they got used to ignore all those little news of which usually they don’t care for.
I had a similar experience with many people either not knowing about SSA or thinking it was already gridwide when it wasn’t or they just heard of SSA and knowing only that they needed an updated viewer, but they had no clue of what it does or they thought it was speeding up the texture loading of anything inworld, included mesh clothes and furnitures, wondering why they could see no difference.

  • So those anyone know why the temporary texture box not showing? Did they remove it? Or is this all part of the “”Update”". Really slowing business -.-, hard to know how good something looks like on my meshes and if i need to improve it, and i don’t want to waist Lindens on useless textures even if its 10L will eventually turn in to thousands.

    DarkWingProductions

    August 22, 2013

  • Temporary textures have been removed as a side-effect of the implementation of Server Side Baking by Linden Lab. The only option now available to get free temporary uploads for testing is to use the Beta Grid (which is what I do anyway) or use OpenSim.

    Hitomi Tiponi

    August 22, 2013

  • same here… anybody knows whats happening with temporary texture option?

    Helen

    August 22, 2013

  • Yes, with the update the temporary texture option no longer shows up but there is another option. When you select a prim and open the Pick Texture window you have a choice between Inventory and Local. Click on Local then Add to select a texture which resides on your computer. I find that I like it better as there is no upload time, even when choosing several textures at once.

    Kimika

    August 22, 2013

  • Temp textures don’t work with SSA so they don’t exist now. Use local textures instead. Those are actually better because they update immediately when you change them on your computer.

  • I can’t get over how there’s people complaining about having to update. They’re adding NEW TECHNOLOGY, TO THE SERVERS, THAT DOESN’T WORK, WITH, THE OLD, VIEWERS, HOW CAN YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THAT? Firestorm, including the latest version, runs fine for me in ultra-ultra, shadows maxed everything maxed all sliders to the right (obviously not counting view distance). And most importantly you can make firestorm look like viewer 1, it’s right at the bottom right of the login page. These people who don’t know what they’re doing and don’t want to learn need to just play minecraft since that’s what they want second life to look like anyway.

  • So far SSA is great! This time LL did an excellent job. I can wear multiple tattoo layers (freckles, brows, lipstick, eyeliner, etc ) without the fear of to end up blurry. The rebaking days are gone. Also are gone those embarrassing moments in which clothing layers are not showing to other people. And comparing different makeups is amazing fast now! Things work better in crowded clubs too. It’s good that LL waited to have it implemented by TPVs too. And a big thank you to the FS Team for all they did!! :)

    August 23, 2013

  • It has been years since a change to SL thrills me like this. Looks to me like they finally step it up at LL; in favor of development — by rendering V1 obsolete of course lol. I was kinda afraid they would delay SSA like for forever as they do in so many cases. I hope they manage to optimize SL much more efficient now. SSA is splendid and Firestorm as a foundation keeps amazing me anyway. Last part wouldn’t have been possible without the hilarious misbehavior by a childish Emerald developer. So, thanks for that too lol…

I certainly feel sorry for Phoenix users, if they have good reason why FS won’t work. That said, I’m quite positive that a fair amount of whining is complete BS. Like, It’s poor judgment to go without quality hardware in favor of the latest iphone. It’s even worse if it comes to software. I wonder how many people actually show some love in maintaining their OS instead of wasting all the time with complaining. It’s funny how many people overcome the challenging task to manage SL’s mechanics but if it comes to their system, there is always that excuse “I’m not a techie”. News update: SL _is_ techie. And then, there are as many unique system as users in the world, with most of them are so f*cked up that even a billion dollar company like Rockstar Games, having thousands of developers around the world, almost gave up on releasing games for Windows. And it’s not like Nvidia or Microsoft drops in at Battery Street to help out, like it’s common practice for ambitious game titles. Open Grid makes a good impression how the user concurrency of SL looks like in about three years, if they won’t get rid of its backward compatibility with 10 years old technology.
