Our next Q&A meeting with our userbase was originally scheduled for tomorrow, February 8th; however, we are going to postpone that by one more week. We are getting much closer to a release but still have a few unsolidified decisions yet to be made that would lead to lots of “We might do this… or we might do that” answers. I expect we will have more solid info by the 15th for you along with some great news!

So our next Q&A will be Saturday, February 15th, at 4PM SLT. We hope to see lots of you there—exciting things are coming!

(Due to a viewer bug you may need to copy/paste this SLurl from here into your viewer. This is fixed for the next release!)

  • Money donations?? You’re funny!!
Your comment did not add anything of value to the announcement.

  • Yeah what Possession said! Who do you think you are postponing a meeting you do on your free time for our benefit?
This is unsatisfactory conduct. Consider your self on report.

  • To what advantage? Just use singularity if you like that interface.

    Cincia Singh

    February 17, 2014

  • Clearly you are unaware of the Vintage skin in Firestorm that is very popular, which is a v1 style skin used in a v3 viewer. The Latency skin in Firestorm is also the same concept. Are you going to suggest to all of the likers of those kinds of skins to use Singularity instead because they want the v1 style interface in a v3 viewer? *smdh*

    Karl Kohnegan

    February 19, 2014

  • Actually I’m aware of ALL the skins in Firestorm and have used them all. The poster asked for a V1 skin to match the one in Singularity. While the Firestorm legacy and vintage skins are more V1 than V2, neither is the same as the Singularity UI. My response was to recommend they use what they like rather than ask for yet ANOTHER duplicate skin and slow work on a release viewer.

    Cincia Singh

    February 20, 2014

  • Read the poster’s comment again, slowly … carefully…and multiple times if you actually need to for proper comprehension. He was not talking about the Singularity skin and nowhere did he ask for a skin to match the one in Singularity. He was talking about other skins that were originally made for v1 viewers that the Singularity people successfully converted to be used with v3 viewers.

  • Please do work extra hard to get HTTP into the next release. I’ve been a supporter of Firestorm since it’s pre-release alpha version and I’ve had to mostly stop using it because it’s memory use just creeps up and up and up until I either have to restart it or it crashes. If it’s any consolation, Singularity does the same thing (though a little slower.)

So more out of desperation than anything else I grabbed a copy of the HTTP RC viewer from LL and WOW! stuff loads faster. Memory creep is greatly reduced, and it actually releases cached stuff after a reasonable time of not needing it (I really wish there was a setting to control this.) No more screen freezing for 10 seconds at a time even in dense textured mainland areas.

I miss the extra functions of Firestorm, but not as much as I enjoy being able to use SL for more than 20 mins at a time without viewer issues. If merging whatever LL did this time round gives the same gains to Firestorm, I’ll be able to happily go back to using it as my go-to viewer instead of my ‘when I need it’s functionality’ viewer.

  • Please make sure that Monty’s HTTP changes are in the next release, even if it means delaying the release just a little longer past the aimed for date if needed. It would be a REAL SHAME if individual users as well as the simulators greatly needing the changes had to wait another 4-6 months for the release after this next one to benefit from it. And as much as getting a Fitted Mesh release out feels like a huge hurry, it isn’t. There are still hardly any items around that are even using the new method yet. And also, even if everyone was on a fitted mesh viewer, there is still going to be that long term adoption period before frequently seeing it on avatars around. So please, please get the HTTP changes out in the next release even if it means having to postpone just a little longer so that everyone can benefit from it … get faster and more reliable rezzing, help with the DNS problems and router instabilities a lot of people experience, and lighten the loads on the simulators to make stalling less frequent.

    March 2, 2014

  • Okay… Let’s take a look at this for what it is. This team hasn’t put out a real release since last July. The “Beta” and “Alpha” that were released 4 months ago were done only to say they released “something” before the holidays. In reality this “team” hasn’t produced a real release for going on over 8 months now. And tomorrow is supposed to be the magic day that we FINALLY see something. This team is really starting to SLag behind. I like the viewer don’t get me wrong. It’s the only viewer I use but when I see the official viewer get way ahead and then even the lesser third party viewers are ahead of this project it makes me pause and say Damn. WTH… What is up with the almighty Firestorm team? Come on team. Jessica you want to be the “Big Girl on the Block” but your team is sucking wind right now. 8 Months now!

    The one and ONLY MizANG

    March 8, 2014

  • The ONLY thing that the LL viewer has which we haven’t released yet is HTTP and Fitted mesh… The only reason LL released HTTP as early as they did is because we helped them test it and assured them it was solid. HTTP and Fitted mesh is also what will be in this release. I may also add LL only just released HTTP last week and Fitted mesh a couple weeks ago. That puts us just about 3 weeks behind LL… where do you get 8 months from that? You should do some research before you make a fool of yourself.

We have over 2/3rds of the user base on our viewer and thus we have a MUCH higher responsibility to get our releases right than any other viewer including LL. The Public beta was as much a release as any other we’ve ever put out except that we ‘decided’ to tag it with a beta title because we didn’t quite get through our quality assurance process. It also allowed us to get Materials out and everything else to stay up to date with LL. We HAVE kept up to date with all of LL’s major changes for the past year, while there are other viewers which haven’t had a release in over a year… and a few just under a year. What reality do you check into?

But really, if you are that upset with us why don’t you stop trolling here and get on another viewer? Please! ;)

    The one and ONLY MizANG

    March 8, 2014

  • There you go again Jessica

Spouting facts and verified statistics combined with reasoned argument when you simply FAIL to deal with the REAL issues here.

You come to us with your insider’s knowledge (read that ELITIST) and you think you can hoodwink and bmboozle the public with your smoke (logic) and mirrors (verifiable facts).

Well I’m here to tell you it won’t work!

You’re reasoning stands no chance against personal bias, gut feelings, and the odd axe or two in need of grinding.

Stop making excuses and be perfect, satisfy everyone and then we will talk about the possibility of your return to “Big Girl on the Block”.

    March 9, 2014

  • LOL… sometimes ya just can’t win.

    Jessica Lyon

    March 11, 2014

  • Mizang isn’t entirely wrong. You rushed out the “beta”, that “didn’t quite get through your quality assurance process”, and even if “you have a MUCH higher responsibility to get your releases right”, because you have “2/3rds of the user base”, you recommended it (now the advice says “optional”, that’s good, imho). Indeed there is a good amount of people who went back from that beta to 4.4.2, the last supposed stable/polished/proper release, because of the issues encountered with the beta. So probably now there is still a good amount of people running a viewer that is many months behind LL, missing even materials. Merchants will be happy with the upcoming release, so that they are going to sell their fitted mesh clothes to about 2/3 of the user base, with just a month of delay this time.
So it’s hard to deny that there is some problem with Firestorm releases, even if I think your attempt to make it as much stable as possible. plus the features and the support team are remarkable and I really appreciate them. I know you have limited resource and you are doing it for free in your spare time, so I wonder if Firestorm is getting too much complex to maintain, somehow, because I don’t think it would take about a year to merge the code and release a new polished release that gets through your quality assurance process (4.4.0 was released in April 2013, announcing that it had an unprecedented quality test etc, yet 4.4.1 came in June to address the many problems encountered anyway, quickly followed by 4.4.2 to fix a mistake in 4.4.1 that was hitting LL servers… since then, no other polished/stable releases, but a “beta” that doesn’t represent your quality standards, as you told). So I wonder if there is a way to optimize your work, somehow. Meanwhile to keep releasing optional betas maybe isn’t a bad idea though, as long as the users know that it is a beta test and what to expect, so they can help you in hunting the bugs (I know a good amount comes from LL). There is not perfect solution, but it might be a compromise. Keep up the good job. Cheers!

    Jessica Lyon

    March 12, 2014

  • Moonwhisper,

And just what is it you do in the effort to develop a better viewer? When was your last stable release. I ask so that I may have a basis to compare your opinions with the realities.

I don’t want to single anyone out but I hear a lot of shit being talked by a good number of folks who have presented no evidence regarding their competence to judge such things.

    Curiously,

  • I’m really waiting on this next release with the hope that I can use Firestorm again. The last 6 weeks since I started using the LL beta viewer with HTTP has been the most trouble free time in SL I’ve had in 8 months. Yeah, I miss FS’s editing features. Yeah, I miss Singularity’s super fast inventory load. I don’t miss them enough to go back to a viewer I can only use for 30-45 mins without running out of memory or such bad disk IO issues that I start getting 20 second pauses at the slightest camera move. I fully accept it’s likely something with my hardware causing that, but ultimately, it’s the end resulting user experience that I care about regardless of which viewer I’m using. For me at least, giving up advanced features to gain stability and performance has been a no-brainer. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t go back to using Firestorm in an instant if the issues it had with my system were resolved or could be with some basic setting changes. If the next release can come even close to the performance of the LL viewer, I’ll switch back, otherwise, well, I’ll keep using what works even with the limitations.

  • We cannot magically fix a bug we aren’t aware of. Have you filed a bug report with us on it? Otherwise just hoping we might fix something that effects you is very little assurance that it will actually happen. I hope this release works for you too.. but hope is little more than hope.

  • I didn’t figure there was much reason when it happened across multiple viewers including LL’s before the HTTP version given that until just recently LL had their Jira’s locked from public view. I’ll see how the next release does and report anything that seems to remain an issue since I’m betting a fair amount of the problems I was having will be taken care of. If not, then I can file jiras.

  • Just wanted to say thank you to all of the Firestorm team for all of the hard work you do on this viewer. I did notice that the due date for the newest release came and went and figured there has been either a glitch, a bug or a hiccup, so I’ll patiently wait for when it comes out, knowing that you guys worked hard to make sure it was as smooth as humanly possible. I do want to say though, that all your hard work is noticed and it is appreciated a lot.
    Be Well.

  • Regarding clean_install, I strongly suggest a converter from previous versions config to current version config. Consider time, effort, and reputation hit involved in requiring tens of thousands of people having to perform couple-of-minutes manual, annoying, “why do I have to do this???” task of dealing with some obscure user data folder(s) somewhere, not to mention the countless numbers of people who will complain about bizarre happenings in their firestorm that can only be ASSUMED to be caused by a failure to clean_install.

Please…from one software engineer to a bunch of others, PLEASE just build into the creation of the user data data the intelligence enough to copy over those settings which do not need to change from the previous version (whatever it may be) to the current one.

I realize it’s not “simple”, but those of us who spend countless hours trying to help people who are suffering mysterious and just plan LOONY problems that seem to be cured by a clean install…PLEASE just make it policy to set a checkbox somewhere for any setting that cannot be brought over identically from the previous version and solve probably thousands of hours of peoples’ time in dealing with this little annoyance that shouldn’t be there.

    _Everyone_ will benefit!!

    Thanks, and best wishes.

  • Me and my husband both have i7 Nvidia 745m, 8g 1tb and when we did a clean install. Then we install the 64bt upgrade. Object would not rezz in, objects stayed as circle like they were trying to come in, hair not fully coming in ect…I even turn down my graphic to med and low no help, and I can run on the beta on ultra with ease. I have talked with a lot of people and some say just like on here that they love it and have no problems and some say they have the same issues I am having…can someone please tell me way some of us is having this issues and some are not?
