Major Firestorm Release 4.6.1.40478

Firestorm 4.6.1.40478 released to the wild!

This release has been a long time coming and took an enormous amount of work to get out to you in its stable state. It contains a lot of new features, loads of bug fixes, crash fixes and stability and compatibility improvements. Along with the usual formats, we are also offering a fully supported Windows 64-bit version and a Linux x64 Beta.

Change Log: For a complete list of features, changes and fixes, please visit the CHANGE LOG and/or view Inara Pey’s BLOG POST, which has in-depth descriptions of most of the important stuff. A list of key items is included below, as well, but is by no means complete.

Clean Install: We always advise that you perform clean installs when updating. http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall

Downloads: Can be found on our Downloads page linked at the top navigation bar of this website. (Please note we are using a new download server for this release and have no idea how well it will perform. Please be patient if downloads are slow.)

Support: As always, if you have any issues or questions please feel free to contact support. However, we ask that you please be patient during the first 48 hours, as this is when we will be most busy, and we are all just volunteers trying to help in our spare time.

  • I bought a new computer. I upgraded my internet connection. Now, ever time – sorry to flame, but EVERY time – I log onto SL via the Phoenix Firestorm viewer I receive the same irritating message:

We were unable to decode the file storing your saved login credentials. At this point saving or deleting credentials will erase all those that were previously stored.
This may happen when you change network setup. Restarting the viewer with previous network configuration may help recovering your saved login credentials.

I’m not a baby. I’m perfectly capable of entering my own SL Username and Password. Can you please please please get rid of this irritating endlessly repeated message? Thanks.

  • Rufus, this is an old thread for a previous release. Are you having the same problem on the current 4.6.5 release?
Do you have the same problem on the official Linden Lab viewer?
Something is amiss on either your new computer or your new connection to cause this message.
Best thing to do is see if the problem also happens on the official viewer and if it does, contact Linden lab support: https://support.secondlife.com/contact-support/

If it only happens on Firestorm then file a JIRA issue so support can help you: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira

  • Awesome update ! Works perfect and oooh~ the graphics looks so much better to my now. Super happy about it. Because the last few days, the older Firestorm was starting to give me troubles. Now I am happy again~ wee. I am also very happy you guys fixed the bug of Usernames to be seen on screen despite having it turned off. Thank you!!! Keep up the awesome job. I hope we will also see more various fonts in the future. I truly like Singularity’s main font. Yay~

  • Sorry for replying to my own comment. But I was so excited! Then I realize the ‘Display name ONLY’ function only worked for a day. It no longer works. So I am stuck with “Display Name” (Username) – constantly. I have a very long username so it takes up a lot, and I got so excited when it was gone upon installing, and now it seems to be unable to get away. Is there anything I can do to hide people’s Username from chat / IM? I’d really appreciate that.

    March 14, 2014

  • This is a bug.
Woekaround is to tick “Usernames” under Preferences -> General, hit Apply, then untick “Usernames” again. This “fix” will hold until you relog.

  • Just wanted to thank ALL of you, for your dedication and hard work. Also, to thank you for the added 64bit. I’ve gone through your list of improvements, fixes and adds, and I can’t imagine how much time it took to do it all. Thank you for adding/fixing the Region Restart Alert, that will help so many people. This viewer is near perfect now. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

    March 13, 2014

  • Workaround:
Activate the Develop menu in the top menu bar with CTRL+ALT+Q.
Develop -> Rendering -> Disable Object- Object occlusion
This will stop the water flicker when ALM is enabled.

  • Ouch!

This 64-bit update takes Win 8 disc usage up to 100% and leaves it there! I have paging turned off but FS was still pushing my disk usage that high. Disc usage was at 15%-35% using the last Beta which I’m going back to.

Also had insane hangs and jumps on a system that runs Ultra graphics without lag. Going to wait until issues are worked out to go with the release full time.

    March 13, 2014

  • I’m having exactly the same problem, huds take forever to display, I lock up and can’t move or lag extremely badly. Didn’t have these problems with the 64 bit Beta, I’ll have to use something else until this is fixed

  • I’ve been waiting for a 64bit linux version every since October. I applaud the effort, but YouTube videos dont play on shared media. 64bit Singularity for Linux shows them just fine, so when it comes to that kind of stuff I still have to depend on them. Just letting you know.

    March 13, 2014

  • Just curious, was FIRE-12401 fixed in this release? Also i find problems in the previously beta release, when doing path cut using the arrow buttons it neverstop at 0.250 but always on some odd number like 0.496 something… thus the correct pathcut number has to be typed in. Sure not a biggy but quite annoying.

Anyway will see soon enough i guess as i’m downloading the latest version now.

  • As far as I know, it’s not fixed – track the issue on the Linden Lab JIRA: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-4633

    Chakat Northspring

The fix will have to come from Linden lab as its rendering pipeline.

  • See http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-12206 for this issue
Its harmless though and will only affect objects as they are rezzing in.
Again, fix needs to come from LL for this as its rendering pipeline.

  • Sorry… i’m reverting back to the beta. Standing in the same sim after a clean install restored my backup my fps has dropped by 50% comaored to the beta…. don’t know what you did but would prefer that the beta had benn promoted to a release version isntead of this :(

    Vanity

    March 13, 2014

  • Just a thought: Something I learned recently at a FS class … After a clean Install of a completely new version of FS, you can’t or shouldn’t use your backups, cause code fixes and changes might no longer be compatible with your backup from the prior viewer version and can cause exactly such problems as you described. The backup is perfect for restoring things within a version, if things go wacky, but not across versions/updates. Just my 3 cents here, the forum’s not exactly a support place and I’m not a support member, but I thought I’d share. Good luck!

    Peebee

    March 13, 2014

  • copy from http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall Peebee

“When updating from an older version of Firestorm, you should always do a clean reinstall as described below. However, you can make use of the backup/restore feature to create a backup copy of your settings, before wiping them all.”

Which is what i did…. i rest my case

    Vanity

    March 23, 2014

  • sorry but am going back to 4-4-2. The new viewer crashed 3x on me in 15 minutes when all i was trying to do was edit the color of something attached to my avatar.
i like using FS over other viewers but i dont need all the extra bells and whistles, just stability.

    Masq

    March 13, 2014

  • Take off all your rigged mesh attachments and see if you still crash – you probably wont.
Add each rigged mesh attachment back one at a time and test editing till you find the culpret.
Very high poly rigged mesh attachments can cause this crash – see http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-10910

Afraid theres no fix for this crash yet apart from not wearing the attachment that causes it.
Rolling back to a previous viewer version wont help, this crash affects all viewers.

  • Sorry this is still a 2D viewer. What happened to the “partnership” with CtrlAltStudio? I’m not expecting Occulus Rift support to be in it yet (although LL’s beta program has just started), I just need normal OpenGL Quad-buffer stereoscopic support, same as was in the CtrlAltStudio release viewer back in September. That was based on FS 4.4.2, so please don’t start blocking that until you add QB 3D stereo to this.

  • Running great for me so far, but how do you access the sliders and such for fitted mesh? I can’t find information on how to access that on the user’s end anywhere!

    William

    March 13, 2014

  • There aren’t any particular sliders for fitted mesh! Fitted mesh consists of an avatar mesh update that allows creators to rig mesh to an increased set of locations within the avatar so the mesh itself resizes automatically when you change your shape (to some extend).

    - Some way to disable those DAMN group invitations without mute the sender, some doesnt show mute option either, i event tried to mute the owner but it didnt work … (ex: after u tp u get tons of group invites and permissions to show ur pic, etc). Pretty annoying nowadays.

  • Nice shiny new viewer but the same old number rounding errors in edit, why hasn’t it been fixed, hate having to go into the Linden viewer to build but looks like its the only alternative now. People do have to build things in SL would be nice to have some accuracy in my builds.

    Frisk

    March 13, 2014

  • You can’t ‘fix’ rounding errors, they’re a side effect of the numbers being floating point numbers.

The only reason to ‘fix’ them is to not allow anything to be created at a scale of less than 1 meter per increment/decrement in size, rotation, etc.
And I doubt you’d like that, would you?

    Iala

    March 13, 2014

  • well why the extra decimal point in firestorm, when the LL viewer doesn’t. Simple question I would like answered.

    Frisk

    March 13, 2014

  • Because we give you EXTRA accuracy in building over what the LL viewer gives you by giving you that extra decimal. Pro builders asked for it in mass years ago and we’ve always offered it.

    Jessica Lyon

    March 13, 2014

  • well seems like a total mess that needs to be fixed, looking side by side in FS and LL viewers it can be way off .0003 fails in my professional builder opinion, it just doesn’t seem to be a problem in the LL viewer and I hate using the LL viewer, other then that I do love using FS but I need accuracy when I build

    Frisk

    March 13, 2014

  • EXTRA accuracy? How can adding extra decimal places to a objects size that is limited to two decimal places give greater accuracy?
Or do you mean the x,y,z axis measurements, and the same code was used for object size regardless of purpose.

  • Disabling Bridge Teleports is probably the most unnecessary thing I’ve seen in awhile. And I use that feature a lot just to catch up with friends in sandboxes, not to cheat or break rules in “serious” places. I can think of no time when you would “have to” remove it, it’s BEEN there all this time.

    Spike Rose

    March 13, 2014

  • Jessica Lyon

    March 13, 2014

  • Read the JIRA entry before chiming in here with my own comments on this.

Those complaining about the feature being abused can cry everyone else a river, build a bridge and get over it. Once you have arrived on a Sim, the teleport routing should NOT grab hold of you and refuse to let go if you are teleporting to a person or position within the same parcel.

I had my own home parcel set up so that those not within a specific group could not simply teleport into the parcel from outside and bypass the landing point. Those in the group were able (if they had Firestorm) to teleport anywhere in the parcel and to anyone on the parcel without issue.

This is in addition to using this function to teleport to a friend – or my pet – if I lost track of them while in a shop or other venue. There is NO reason to force a user to go back to some centralized location that is FARTHER away and/or requires the user to navigate through multiple floors or sections of a build just to get back to the position they HAD been at prior to trying to teleport.

And NO, having the target friend send a teleport request is NOT always an option.

So no – you did NOT ‘have’ to nerf the feature. If you are going to start pulling THAT crap over people abusing your feature sets, just nuke the entire project, wipe your downloads and get it over with.

    Dark Wolf

    March 16, 2014

  • Couldn’t agree more with you on all points except one. I DID have to nuke the feature. And if you feel the alternative is better to nuke the project.. then find another viewer so you can truly appreciate the alternative you suggest.

    Jessica Lyon

    March 16, 2014

  • No present client program offers the other features I use. That said …

No, you did not have to remove that feature – full stop. You removed it to please a group of people who complain about EVERYTHING that gets abused and took a step down a very slippery slope.

It is a simple fact that this slope ends with the scrapping of ALL TPV projects and indeed with Second Life as a whole. EVERY feature and function can be abused in one way or another. Some, yes, need to be disabled/removed or retuned.

A function that has more legitimate uses as opposed to abuses? No. It should have been left in.

The snark was not warranted here – IF there had been another client program that actually had the other features I actually use on a daily basis without additional tinkering, THAT alone would have pushed me away.

I do not comment here often. I only comment in cases wherein a prior poster is being a nuisance, a response from you or your team is snarky/abrupt or when I simply cannot remain silent any further.

This was the latter two. Telling a user to “read” and then posting a JIRA link is a snarky/abrupt brush off and quite frankly the MINORITY that complained (and yes, JIRA users ARE a minority, a very vocal one at that) is the same sort that see the general user base as existing to cater to THEIR whims.

If you are retuning the function, bloody well say so instead of pulling it and being an ass when someone that actually used it for its intended purpose comes along.

Personally, I’d have loved it if you’d told the complainers to shove it, the function remains in while work is being done on it. Enough gets broken as it is by Linden Lab without adding to the pile.

  • Missed the part where you stated that Linden Lab ALSO pulled an utter bullshit move by trying to tell you it violated their TPVP.

THEY put the call into their own code. They want people to stop using it?

THEY need to remove the LSL call.

MOST users that used this feature are not going to want to recreate the code or shell out any amount of (virtual) cash to get the functionality back.

    March 13, 2014

  • Well, I was dismissed by the support team last night. Awesome service, guys.

I am running an i5 with Nvidia 650 GTX 2gb graphics card and a 1TB HD. I have 12GB of ram and Windows 8. I have paging off in Virtual Memory as it tends to write to the drive without reason.

The Firestorm 32-bit beta runs at 5% Disk Usage once fully loaded with no other programs running aside from my virus protection. I experience no lag, smooth loading times, and run at Ultra graphics with no issues.

The Firestorm 64-bit release runs at 100% Disk Usage once fully loaded with no other programs loading aside from my virus protection. I experience world freezes, hang, diminished graphics, textures not loading and run at Ultra graphics with severe issues.

I’ve run several tests, the only thing pushing up the Disk Usage is Firestorm 4.6 64 bit. Turn it off and the Disk Usage drops to normal. With that much ram and that large of a HD, this shouldn’t be happening. I did a clean install. In fact, I did two clean installs.

It’s not my computer (which must be “bad” according to the person I talk to), it’s something in Firestorm. Could Win 8 users having issues check Disk Usage while running this release for me and see if it is indeed causing their Disk Usage to skyrocket too? I went back to the beta and everything (sand I mean EVERYTHING) was fixed – advanced lightning again looked beautiful, no lag, no hangs, no freezes. Common sense dictates this release needs tweaking.

    Eleanor Ocheis

    March 13, 2014

  • Eleanor.. To my knowledge you are the first to report higher than normal disk usage on 4.6.1. And we’ve got around 31,000 people on 4.6.1 as of this moment. That is not saying it is you or your computer… just saying that it is unusual. We have no idea why this should be without having developers look further into the problem and work with you to figure it out. In order to do that we need you to file a bug report on our Jira. http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=file_a_jira .

Also.. it wouldn’t be that support ‘dismissed’ you.. but more that support is not equipped to understand what would cause your particular problem.

    Jessica Lyon

    March 13, 2014

  • The disk usage problem has also been reported by Ouch in this thread (the 7th reply above). However, the best thing you can do, Eleanor and Ouch, is to file a bug report in the Jira.

    Shy Robbiani

    March 14, 2014

  • I think I found the issue.

Importing back up settings pushed disk usage to 100% when I tested the 32-bit version (and they did not drop no matter what). There might be an issue with restoring backups which would royally SUCK, not gonna lie.

I’m going to try another clean install without restoring back ups and see if it helps.

It comes installed with pulseaudio as default sound system and also all alsa related plugins, libraries etc are installed too. Sound works fine, media work fine, streaming audio too but…. NO VOICE! I can’t hear people and they can’t hear me too. The Mic button is not activating at all. I tried going in preferences, audio setup but no “green indicator”, options to choose input and output devices are grey. I tried miscellaneous “solutions” and “fixes” i found on the internet (like copying voice files from other viewers, comment out OpenAL in firestorm file etc.) but none of them worked. Singularity 1.8.5 64-bit for Linux worked out of the box (i noticed that “OpenAL” is commented out in the singularity file, but this doesn’t work in firestorm as i said before). Any solutions? It’s a pitty to at last have Firestorm in 64-bit for Linux but without voice!!!!!

  • Hi Whirly. I read the link you gave me and somewhere it says this: “Make sure you have ALSA and/or FMOD available. FMOD is supplied with Firestorm, normally. If you look at Help → About Firestorm, you should see a line that resembles this:
Audio Driver Version: OpenAL, version 1.1 ALSOFT 1.11.753 / OpenAL Community / OpenAL Soft: PulseAudio Software”

So, i should see OpenAL as Audio Driver and PulseAudio as OpenAL Soft. Instead i see FMODEX 4.44.25 in Audio Driver Version and “Vivox” in OpenAL Soft! I tried commenting out the line “#export LL_BAD_OPENAL_DRIVER=x” but nothing changed, it still showed the same things. I also noticed that on Singularity 64-bit there is one extra file used by the viewer called “libasound” or something like this but it doesn’t exist in Firestorm. I will file a Jira but i’m sure that either there will be no solution (becuase my linux distro is not as widely used as, for example, Ubuntu) or it will take too long. That’s why i was hoping that there may be a tweak or something which would work for sure. I’ve carefully read the rest of the wiki link you gave me but it mostly referes to “Audio Setup” option in viewer preferences and i can’t use it because whenever i go in there (before or after logging in SL) it just doesn’t show anything (just greyed out options). I forgot to mention that I also noticed that SLVoice process isn’t loaded by the viewer (after running it and logging in I only see “SLPlugin” and Firestorm running).

  • I”m having same problem. NO voice at all ( wont’ let me configure the voice) on Firestorm 4.6.1 on ubuntu 14.04 while on singularity I have no problem setting up or using voice chat.

Have checked out the site it was refered and have checked the files that comes with firestorm to set up voice. Still have no voice from me nor from other users at all.

    Thank you

  • Would be great if you finally release a version that doesn’t make the screen pink for ATI Readon gc users.

It’s always the same! New new but ATI Readon gc users are left behind. Is it sooooo difficult? I guess not.

    March 13, 2014

  • As programmer who have worked with graphics and gamer and long time SL resident I can say – blame ATI. No matter how good their hardware is, their drivers are always complete and total crap. They don’t follow OpenGL specification, making it a nightmare for programmers to make their software work with ATI cards as it does with others. The best solution to pink screen bug is to buy an nVidia card and give the ATI card to your enemy.

    March 14, 2014

  • If you are just seeing some pink on objects as they are rezzing in, then this is “normal” on the current codebase.
If EVERYTHING os pink and stays pink then you need to update your ATI drivers – the pink bug only affects drivers that are years out of date.
If you dont know how to get your drivers updated, file a support JIRA (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) and support will help you.

I am not a developer or code writer or script writer, but I am on line with Firestorm some 16 + hours as day.I eagerly grabbed the first version as soon as you put it out for preview, all the way to this final release. I don’t use the photography items and I am not a designer of mesh items, but I do love the viewer. • A bit disappointed after doing a thorough clean install and putting in the new version. Various unannounced major crashes to desktop is my biggest complaint and yes I have checked the wiki crash page – been with FS for quite some time. After troubleshooting with no success I reverted back to the beta version in which I have absolutely no trouble at all. Was this build completely tested before being officially released?

With the new export members tool (which I love) being available to everyone, for any group, even if they are not the group owner (don’t love), the spammers are already in full force… sighs…

Any chance of making that tool only available to Group Owners only please? Right Away even? Other viewers have had this, but only the Group Owner could export. Pretty please, fix this before more spammers get these lists… !

  • Hey Sen! <3

Only group members who have the GP_MEMBER_VISIBLE_IN_DIR power can export a members list to csv.

Just to clarify – users can ONLY export the group member list if they are a member of that group AND they must be in a role that has In other words, whose whose role has “Reveal members” enabled.

If you think you found a bug with the permissions for who can export the members list, please can you comment on http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-12276

  • Hi folks, I’m currently using this FS release version 4.6.1.40478. Before that I used the previous release version 4.4.2.34167. The current release version and the beta version both had a smaller font in the LSL edit window than the previous release version.
The balance between the other fonts and the LSL font in the previous release version was perfect. However, in the last two versions, the LSL font is too small for me. This is really straining, because I have to stare at LSL code all day. Moreover, I don’t want to enlarge the entire user interface scale just for the sake of LSL readability. A larger user interface just clutters my screen space more. Also, I don’t want to use an external editor. That’s just too many clicks and strokes back and forth given the amount of scripting I do. Is there a way to increase the LSL font _WITHOUT_ increasing the other user interface fonts? If so, how?

  • At the download link for the OS X version for SL and OpenSim, it says ‘Intel version’. Since all Intel Macs are 64-bit, this made me assume it was the 64-bit version. However, Omega, in the Firestorm support group, told me there’s no 32-bit version for the Mac available yet. So (i) The link description is a big vague and (ii) Any idea when the 64-bit version for OS X will be out?

    Arduenn Schwartzman

    March 14, 2014

  • The problem with a 64-bit OS X version is that two of the required libraries that have to be rebuilt as 64-bit versions are refusing to build. I’m working on that in my copious free time, but can’t promise when it’ll start working.

  • Camming still misbehaves. When I hold ALT and click an object I want to hook my camera to – it does get hooked, but my camera sometimes (more often than I’d like) gets turned the opposite direction around the object or even thrown somewhere far away. Been going on for many releases now.

Also, there’s avatar I have to meet sometimes who wears huge wings that get in my way. I derender and blocklist them, but it only works for one session. When I relog – the wings are there again. Haven’t tested it with the new release yet.

  • All going great, and good to have the new 4.6.1 release.. thanks to everyone in the Firestorm team. Just a few quick items of feedback…

    a) I had to set Object-Object Occlusion off to avoid the flashing water on adjacent sims issue on my Nvidia GPUs, but it shows the same problem on the LL official viewer too.

    b) I get the bright pink colour for transparent textures (trees, hedges and what not) for a while as regions load. Its really ugly and spoils the immersion. I did not see this with 4.5.1 Beta fro example – as far as I can recall.

    c) The OpenSim hop:// protocol does work, but I had to manually select FirestormOS as the selected program. I thought it was meant to register (or offer to register) the viewer as the selected program for hop:// handling during installation?

    d) The problem of not be being able to use a hop:// URL for hops on the SAME grid you are already on is still present and fails saying “Region not found”. I noted this in a comment on JIRA FIRE-9687. See some hop:// examples that I think ought (eventually) to work when moving between on inside any two grids… http://www.aiai.ed.ac.uk/~ai/hg.html

  • a) Yes, this bug isnt fixed yet. See http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-11965
Fix will need to come from Linden Lab for this one as its render pipeline.

    b) See http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-12206
Again, fix needs to come from Linden Lab.

    c) Not sure about this, I dont use other grids but sounds like expected behaviour.

    d) You already commented on the JIRA for this – sounds like a bug.

  • Using the 64 bit now for 2 days, loving it.
Only I was not aware, nor saw any documentation on this: No Havok Support?
Now I need to revert back to the 32 bit, but that is no fun once you tasted 64 bit. And the new installer does not let me specify folders so I have no clue how to get it running side by side.
I only need the 32-bit for mesh uploads, and that is all.

Havok Support for 64-bit is a must. This definatly is a huge dissapointment for me :(

    Full clean install!
Set all graphics to ultra via preferences panel, changed camera angles via debug and lod (sorry but i use lod set to 14) and maxmesh (64 for me!).
On Osgrid, it work better then any previous viewer (even Imprudence!).
Set it also on Sl even if i use another viewer there!
    Also works perfectly there.
The bugs i have are the 1 from LL not Firestorm!
The only thing i could not figure on the thousands of choices (yes im a minimalist|!) is how to place a fps meter that shows the fps in Numbers, on the top bar!
Besides that, all that i need is there and all works!

  • I’ve tried both the 32 and 64 bit for windows, and both “lag” quite a bit, for lack of a better term. Camming is not very smooth. Animations are “choppy” as well. And this is with very few (if any) other avatars around. Go to a busy sim, and forget it. I soon get the “black” screen and crash. Just doesn’t seem nearly as stable as 4.4.2, which I had zero issues with. That viewer was smooth as silk, and this one doesn’t come close.

    Cody

    March 15, 2014

  • I am also having the same lag and choppy issues with 32 and 64 bit as is my husband and he crashed all the time. We’re both on windows 8.1 64 bit machines but I wanna see fitted mesh and wear it :(

    Peggie Bundy

    March 15, 2014

  • I haven’t used this release long enough to judge but already found an issue where I have to right-mouse-click on objects on the sim (e.g. trees) and/or some of my worn attachments (e.g. sleeves) to make them visible after tp. I had this issues in earlier releases and I’m not alone, my partner has the same issues with a completely different hardware environment.

As a user of Opensim and Secondlife I was happy to see the 64-bit version at first, but then removed it again after I had configuration issues (due to my mixed environment) and a horrible crash after a few minutes. As there was no recognizable performance gain I decided to make my life easier and stick to the 32-bit release.

However, it’s good to see the Firestorm Team got a new release out after such a long time, a release that is up-to-date with the latest technology, like fitted mesh that probably will be adopted fast by the community.

I hope to see a further release that takes care of stability and the small bugs left behind soon. And, as I’m aware of the releated developer resources, I hope the Team continues to support the Opensim community as well.

    Keep up the good work!

I tried repeatedly over the past few days to use the newest version, but the constant locking up (100% CPU usage) resulted in me being able to do nothing but stand in my home and chat, similar to Nalates’ experience. My TPs to other regions resulted in the viewer freezing for minutes at a time, even with no other avatars around. I’ll keep trying as updates are released, but if the situation doesn’t improve, will just use 4.4.2 until it too is blocked.

  • Stop the presses. Before totally giving up on this version I decided to spend a little more time with it. I have fixed the lag, random freezing and low framerates. 1) Turn off HTTP Textures 2) Reduced particles to 4096 3) Draw Distance at 128 4) Maximum # of Non Imposter Avatars down to 12 4) Set Shadows to Sun/Moon only. I can report that this has fixed it for me your mileage may vary. My guess is most of it has to do with the HTTP textures. Staying on this release for now. And just as I am critical I can also be appreciative so Thank you Firestorm Team for a great release.

    Jessica Lyon

    March 21, 2014

  • Jessica I am NOT under the impression he INVENTED screen space reflections LOL All I was saying is that he’s been using it before FS and its about time FS use it too! Niran had said it himself it was by a Linden and he had permission to try it out on his viewer, which started out as Niran’s Viewer then became Black Dragon. I’m sure its been in the works for some time, I don’t need your link for that (which doesn’t work btw) But Niran had introduced it onto his viewer eight months ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0D-jM-lHvQ&list=UU2_6jAkf8rK2YiD8dg0zH6A So what I *am* under the impression is that Niran had it first as in used the feature first…before Firestorm. You said you had it “LONG before Black Dragon even existed…” but according to my knowledge AND firestorm team members on the group….it never was on Firestorm until now. Not trying to argue here…I’m just a little confused with what you’re saying =/

My biggest fear is that when the next release comes out, I will have the same issues and won’t have a choice but to upgrade or have my version blocked from the grid. I don’t want to go to a different viewer, but if this keeps up on the next release, I simply won’t have a choice.

And please dont say: bacause the LL standards, and recruiments, blabla… No! SL viewer working fine without this problems, with much better Fps… Kokua (of course long time with 64bit) working much much better!
I think have some BIG mistake in firestorm code, and have too much laggy built in feature…
Its bad work… I sorry, I long time wait this version, and im sad, need switch to other viewer…

  • Hello, wondering if anyone is still noticing this bug not being fixed still? ‘Fixed SLurl / Map links failing to open inworld from external sources’

This still doesn’t seem to work for me whenever I click a slurl link outside of SL.

  • I’m having this heavy disk usage too – not directly after starting FS 64bit, but after maybe two or three hours … it is that bad, that even when I only want to switch camera perspective, it’s starting to give me constantly high diskload, resulting in SL disconnect (sometimes about 5 min till I get that grey screen to see IM or quit SL).
When closing FS, it takes another few minutes with heavy disk access.

  • In direct comparison, is FS 4.6.1 64bit roughly 10 fps slower than 4.4.2 on my system (GTX 570, 6-core 3.3GHz CPU). Tested on several scenes, where the FPS of 4.4.2 would be 48-50, achieves 4.6.1 64bit only like 38fps more or less. I can reproduce it every time.

Is this affected by the new features in the viewer or by the 64bit?

  • There is a huge issue with the music streams. The radios sims play on the land is fine but when you put in to stream your music…half the people can’t hear it. The 4.4 viewer will no longer play it at all for most and this new viewer…sometimes you hear, sometimes you don’t. Toggling sometimes works but sometimes doesn’t. I am a streamer for a band and it really sucks when part of the band members can’t hear the stream and then we are losing the audience because they can’t hear. This started on Sunday and was bad again tonight. Something needs to be looked into on this!

  • Thanks Jessica and the gang. After tinkering with it for a few days, I must say, it’s rock solid to me. Even solved a YEARS OLD issue with my group settings not working after relogs. Can’t believe I finally got rid of that! And I love the new contact sets. I gonna categorize soooo many random people now LOL!

For some reason, the x32 version is somewhat smoother for me (If it matters: i7-2600K CPU, 16GB RAM, W7 x64 SP1, GTX 560 Ti/PCIe/SSE2). The only little annoyance is the username bug (http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-13073). I just wish you could release a little hotfix, but apart from that, everything feels just right :)

  • Well, so far, I’m “eh” about this version. It seems a tad more laggy, but not horrid. I’m not seeing the CPU usage issue that people have reported. I had my window open while in FS, and then I closed FS and my CPU usage only changed by 1% (it was on 2% with FS open, 2 browsers, PS, and notepad). It did, however, drop 2 gigs of ram when I closed FS. So it definitely uses the memory. However, I did NOT use the “restore settings” feature (because I was an idiot, and hit backup instead of restore so it overwrote my backed up settings. duh), soooooo I can’t report anything on backed up settings affecting CPU usage. I tested out materials – seems to work ok, but adds some lag. I haven’t tested fitted mesh yet. So other than that, and figuring out how to remove the stupid extra decimal places in my build window, it’s ok so far. :D

  • Norton has ALWAYS alerted me that I’m using 100% CPU…in ANY viewer that I use LOL So for me this is nothing new. I remember talking about it with a friend before and he don’t know why it happens to him either. My CPU alerts are few and happens randomly. My rig is capable of running ultra graphics with ease, all the time. I have a 6core AMD CPU, GTX770, blah blah… So I eventually begain assuming the high CPU is natural considering SL and all it can do. It still irks me when I see it though. I never get CPU alerts on anything but SL. Again, on any viewer. Very currious about this!
As for the decimal bug…I build and I haven’t noticed it. But then again I HATE looking at numbers lol I know its not a good combo to build and hate numbers, but my projects are still full of lots of care and quality. I *do* make sure everything is even and lined up….but this decimal….geez I hope I’m not too bad off XD

  • Well the 32 bit closed and open sim both crash when using the music button. Same for the 64 bit all linux. Wierd it does not happen with my build. x64 .

  • So far, the 32 bit version is working pretty well for me. I don’t have a 64 bit system so all of the issues reported for that don’t effect me. I haven’t played with ALL the buttons yet but those I have seem to work just fine. Some things seem to rez a bit faster and some things a bit slower, so I guess it all balances out.

  • for the 32 bit export openal from the wrapper but you have to let it crash once after setting up your sound. no flash on a prim. out of the 6 linux systems I run none have been able to use the FOP since late 2012 and early 2013. since LL build of the llqtwebkit. For the 64 bit build the media crash . Seems pretty broken.
replaced with my build and stuffed it in to your build works fine.
    must be a linker problem.

  • Just to note.

My brand new 3 week old computer died in the middle of trying to fix this release, after repeatedly messing with it and trying to figure out why there was a 100% disk usage issue or how to fix it. I have yet to hear what part broke but if it was the CPU or HDD, I’m not going to be pleased.

  • I was a big fan of firestorm, but with the last update you have really messed up. I have suddenly a high RAM usage and all I can see at different Forum that you blame it to the sims or I should reduce my grafic, all was fine before the update, I have the same graphic settings like before and was running max 1,5 gb and now it jumps as soon as I leave my home at every sim to 2,5 – 3 gb .. and if I go back home, where I have started at 1gb .. I am still running the high ram usage of 2,5 – 3 gb, nothing is reduced .. in my eyes you have so messed up and I cant use firestorm any more. It is no SL life Quality to have a Minimum grafic runnig, I had never a high grafic running, medium .. but even I lower the graphic, I tested out, nothing changed .. it stays at the the same high RAM usage .. damn what have you done??

  • Hi,
I noticed a little glitch in the Mac Version. When in Mouselook: press Right Click to Zoom In and Out. You will notice that your mouse does not steer normally instead it gets stuck (fixed) and you will not be able to turn the camera with your mouse naturally till you release the Right Click. When you release it, your mouse look will function correctly. This never happened in the previous versions, and will appreciate if it’s fixed in the upcoming releases. This function is very essential for games and machinema.

  • I hope they fix the ‘username’ bug soon. It’s a pain to have to keep fixing the problem every time I log in.

Also, I used to be able to hit my ‘up’ arrow to be able to reply the same message when I wanted to (yes Mistress Jane Doe, no Mistress Jane Doe). Now I have to write out every bit of text.

And apparently this update isn’t any more stable for me than the old version. Crashes are just as frequent as the old update.

However, I do enjoy the text broadening into paragraph form so I can read the entirety of what I am texting, instead of having to hope I haven’t screwed up along the way or having to go back to the front of the message and then go back along the way to the end. Very nice adjustment.

I’ll see as time goes on how this update pleases/frustrates me as time goes by.

  • Yeah, I just got this, and It’s already getting me mad, because all I can do is stand there not to mention it takes me 5 minutes or more to start a conversation with my friends or log out. So I have to have my graphics on low to be able to do anything. It is really frustrating.

  • I’m still having nightmares with the X64 version running on an i7 laptop with an SSD, slow rezzing, locking up, graphics taking forever to load, you name it. I’ve had to go back to the standard SL viewer (which I hate with a passion) in self defense as at least everything works at normal speed with that. I didn’t have any of these problems with the beta by the way, nor did I restore my settings from backup after doing a clean install, so that’s not the culprit. Hope you find it soon!

  • You could just use our 32bit rather than the LL viewer which is also 32bit. We have had some reports of folks with the same problems you are describing and only happening on our x64 version. We’re still trying to figure out the cause.

  • […] per Firestorm 4.6.1 (fitted mesh, request teleport, SL share, […]

  • Two things. One, when I have firestorm minimized, it no longer flashes when I get an IM. That feature was VERY helpful for me for the line of work I do on SL. So now I have no idea when I client IMs me because I have SL minimized and I am doing something else. For those that do not like the flashing icon, maybe implement a way to check that feature on and off. I really would like to see it back or be stepped through how to make it do that again.

Two, transparency and mesh. I buy rigged mesh goodies, specifically from Barerose, and I modify them a tad. I tried to add a transparent texture to a part of a rigged mesh outfit and it did nothing. I was extremely baffled. The mesh part hadn’t changed in world even though the texture tab showed it had the transparent texture.

I remember a similar thing happening with the beta release late last year so I went back to the most recent release and it fixed the problem. Any help would be most appreciated!

  • For some reason I can’t get my old chat logs to show up in this new Firestorm release even when I set the Conversation logs and transcripts location to the same folder as my old logs. Any ideas on what is causing this issue? Never had a problem with past release updates and using the old chat logs to view chat history.

  • I just go this new version, and I didn’t have any problems with the old version, until I tried to log in and it said it was blocked. So I updated and now I can’t do anything on SL but stand, and I can BARELY do that! It’s super slow and getting on my nerves. My graphics are set on low, and I don’t want to have to stay on low graphics for ever just to be able to walk and start IMs with my friends, which by the way takes about 5 minutes to do. If you have any way of fixing this that would be great, because I am so close to getting off of Second Life because I can’t do anything!

  • As a builder I have found this issue with the Mac viewer 4.6.1
Running Mavericks, the viewer does Not use Local textures. It’s a very important feature for texture adjustments before uploads specially for builders. I hope you have this issue fixed with the upcoming release. For now I have to use other viewers for building.
