Firestorm Update 5.0.1.52150 with BENTO!

translation services

The demand for a Bento-capable Firestorm Viewer has been overwhelming, to say the least! With over 8,000 people in our preview group running it, is widely regarded as faster by testers and is expected to be a rock-solid update. For those who don’t know about it, Bento is Linden Lab’s latest and greatest improvement to Second Life that enables a whole new realm of possibilities and realism for avatars. Because it adds dozens of new joints to the Second Life avatar skeleton, we can now have ultrarealistic moving tails, ears, wings, fingers, facial expressions and so much more! For more info on Bento, check out Torley Linden’s Video or Linden Lab’s announcement or read from the many posts about it, including at Inara Pey’s blog. Even if you have no intention of using Bento-enabled content or animations, you will need this viewer in order to see it properly on others.

But this Firestorm Viewer update isn’t just about Bento. It’s also packed with lots of RLVa fixes, new features, performance improvements, bug fixes and so much more! There are some highlights below, but first a quick reminder: If you’re currently using version 4.7.5, you have three weeks to update to any of our more recent releases (5.0.1 recommended and supported; 4.7.9 and 4.7.7 permitted) before your viewer will be blocked. Versions 4.7.7 and 4.7.9 will continue being usable for now.

And now the 5.0.1 release highlights!

  • Visual Outfit Browser (VOB) feature from Linden Lab:
    • VOB allows you to use the Appearance floater to capture/upload/select images of your outfits and save them alongside the outfits in a new Outfit Gallery tab.
  • New Avatar Render Settings feature under World menu:
    • Lists all avatars you have chosen to fully render or never render.
    • Right-clicking on one or multiple avatars allows direct changing of the setting.
  • Improved Asset Blacklist:
    • Temporarily blocked objects are now shown in the Asset Blacklist floater so they can be removed.
    • Fixed the crash when leaving an area where many objects were blacklisted.
    • Added an option to rerender temporarily derendered objects after teleport or after end of session or to perform manual rerendering via the Asset Blacklist floater.
    • Added button to clear all temporarily derendered objects to the Asset Blacklist floater.
  • New option to log autoaccepted inventory to nearby chat:
    • Preferences -> Privacy -> General -> Log automatically accepted inventory items to nearby chat.
  • Status bar improvements:
    • Added an FPS meter and seconds to the clock.
  • New option to render friends only:
    • World -> Show Friends Only.
  • You can now resize the Movement controls:
    • Avatar -> Move Controls.
  • Attachments ghosting after teleport fixes:
    • Ghosted attachments are those that appear attached, but others don’t see them.
    • This fix will not 100% eliminate the bug (that will need a server-side fix), but the frequency of the bug should be much reduced.
    • For when things do go wrong, added a new “Refresh Attachments” feature — in cases where an attachment is ghosted, it will attempt to reattach it:
    • Avatar -> Avatar Health -> Refresh Attachments.
  • RLV updated to RLVa-2.1.0 and many RLV bug fixes.
  • Project VLC from Linden Lab:
    • QuickTime has been replaced with LibVLC support for the Windows and Linux versions of the viewer, as Apple recently announced they are no longer supporting QuickTime for Windows and will not be offering security updates.
  • Firestorm is now DPI-aware — no more tiny user interface and font on high-resolution monitors.
  • New font! — Google Noto:
    • Preferences -> User Interface -> Font.

For more information, you can see our RELEASE NOTES or have a read from Inara’s summary here.

Since this is such a significant release, and since it merges us up with LL’s new 5.0 Bento viewer release, we’ve decided to change our version numbering convention to match LL’s moving forward. This version is 5.0.1.52150, and from now on the first two digits of our versions (in this case 5.0) will reflect the version of the LL viewer it is in parity with. This should help you identify what we’re up to date with on the LL side of things.*

If this all sounds confusing, don’t worry — the only thing you need to know is that higher numbers are newer, and we are keeping up with LL features and functionality while maintaining an ultrastable, feature-rich viewer for accessing Second Life and other virtual worlds, just for you!

Sincerely,

The Firestorm Team!

P.S. Hope to see you all at our Christmas Party on the 18th! Live performances and great gifts as always, announcement to follow later this week!

* The third number, such as the 1 in 5.0.1, will be specific to Firestorm (odd numbers are used for release versions, and even numbers are internal and prerelease builds such as alphas and betas). The last set of numbers, such as the 52150, reflects the revision from our repository.
  • Is a clean install recommended with this version, or can I install over previous as has been done with older versions?

  • I installed over previous version and no problems so far, but always worth keeping a backup of settings folder just in case.

  • I would like to know is this Bento thing can really make a difference for residents that use a mesh avatar, like Aesthetic. Or is just to improve normal avatars? Thanks

    SantaKlaus

    December 14, 2016

  • The Aesthetic mesh avatar won’t change at all with Bento unless the creator updates the rigging for the Bento skeleton.
I expect most mesh body creators will update their bodies to Bento pretty quickly though.
The default classic avatar also will not change at all with Bento.
You can of course use Bento attachments with any avatar base – classic or mesh.

A few examples of Bento enabled attachments that will work on any avatar:
    Catwa female bento Head
    Akeruka male Bento head
    Vista Bento hands
    FATEplay Bento wings
    FATEplay Bento cape
aii Bento Demon Wings and Tails

  • I agree and I couldn’t wait for Bento! It’s really great news that Firestorm with Bento has been released just a little after LL released Bento. No long waits this time, and I’m very glad that LL is cooperating with the community.

Plus while Firestorm 4.7.9 64 bit for Linux crashed often (unlike previous versions) Firestorm 5.0.1 seems to have fixed it in my case. No crash so far. And I like the “Experimental fix for ghosted attachments after teleport or region crossing”.

Thumbs up everyone! Thank you people for this release.

    December 14, 2016

  • Hi, I did a complete clean install and even turned off my computer and back on. I instealled the 64 bit one as my computer is a 64 bit windows 8.1. but when i got into Second life…i lost almost 100K of stuff? it only gives me 48K instead of 148K. How can I get it back? i went off and back on and it still wont give me all my items. do I need to install something extra or the other version?

  • Clear your inventory cache, go to > preferences and then to > network & directories.Clear inventory cache. Then relog. That usually brings it all back for me. Good luck.

    December 14, 2016

  • Hello there! I have the same problem like Victoria… My inventory miss around 100K stuff 🙁 I installed the 64 bit version on Windows 8.1. I did a clean install (using this http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_install) and restarted my computer after installation finishes. The items seems to be in my inventory but the fetching number stops at 65K. I tried everything described in here http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_missing_inventory but it still won’t show the correct number. Do you have any other advice please? ^.^

    Emily

    December 15, 2016

  • So you do have all your items in inventory as far as you can tell? It’s just the inventory count that seems to be wrong and it’s stuck at “fetching..”?
Try logging directly into a different region & see if that helps at all.
If not, can you see if you have the same problem on the Linden Lab viewer (https://secondlife.com/support/downloads/).
If the LL viewer has the same problem, file a support ticket with Linden Lab at https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/ so they can check your inventory for problems.
If you only have the problem on Firestorm, please file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) so we can investigate.
    Thanks!

    Whirly Fizzle

    December 17, 2016

  • I just filled a ticket to SL support and wait for their answer. Thank you so much for your help! I’ll post back if they can fix it… *fingers crossed*

    Emily

    December 18, 2016

  • Fetching numbers are exactly the same in Firestorm and SL official viewer! After a long debate and after I try everything SL support told me to do, I have the same result… my inventory show a wrong fetching number for my items, instead 165K it shows about 65K items. Still, it seems all my items are in my inventory. I quote the conclusion from last SL Support email: “I’m sorry but your viewers are reporting the numbers we are showing. With no proof of missing inventory it does not appear that anything is wrong.” I really don’t know what to do more :((

    Emily

    December 19, 2016

  • Hmm odd…
So LL support were seeing 65k instead of 165k at their end too?
I was wondering if there was a UI display glitch that was causing the 1 in 165 not to display for some reason (suspect non-default UI scaling setting in the viewers), but if LL support are seeing that you have only 65k at the back end too, then that isn’t the case.
Is it possible that you had many thousands of items in your Trash &/or Lost & Found & you emptied either of those folders? I’ve seen this happen before where someone had tens of thousands in Trash & thought they had lost inventory when they finally purged their trash.

    December 14, 2016

  • There is a potential cause of error in this installation. You changed the name of the executable from Firestorm-bin.exe to FirestormOS-Releasex64.exe, and the intaller leaves the old exe file when installing over the previous version*. So when I use an existing shortcut to start Firestorm, as I usually do, it runs the old version with the new files.

*Speaking of installing over an existing version, the installer always suggests the default directory on drive C. It would be nice if Firestorm, like other software, would check the registry to see if and where an older version is installed and change the directory to that location. I’ve forgotten to change it a few times in the past and ended up with two installations.

    Ishtara

    December 14, 2016

  • Ditto. I now have 2 Firestorm directories, one with the “OS” lettering. Both my shortcuts load the latest viewer. But it just crashed when I tried to detach an item; it failed to detach, I tried to edit it, the viewer did a white-out and I had to restart my PC.

    Jay

    December 14, 2016

  • If that crash happens again, please can you file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) so we can get your logs and investigate.

Btw. You guys doing an awesome job!

    December 14, 2016

  • Given enough time viewer versions that don’t support Bento will be blocked from being able to log in. For viewers other than FS it’ll be up to LL whether or when to block them from being able to log in. (Strictly speaking that’s true for FS as well, it’s just that the FS team are proactively blocking very old versions from logging in, before LL forces those viewers to not log in.)

  • Sadly this has not gone smoothly for me.

Meshes aren’t rendering well in-game, it seems completely random. Seems like after an initial world-load-in things just stop bothering to load.

I have the Maitreya mesh body on, but the UI for it is completely unresponsive. The body itself can’t be worked with, like alpha layers, etc. Mesh hair isn’t loading, attachments in-general aren’t loading.

The game is completely unplyable. 🙁

    December 14, 2016

  • Same for me! Everything was fine till I updated, a clean update. I have a great quality gaming desktop so not sure what is causing this. Most of the time everything inworld is gray and at times mesh appears in triangles or they just don’t load. I tried the usual disabling HTTP, adjusting render number, etc. No help. Very disappointed to be in the minority list of those having issues :'(

    Mia

    December 16, 2016

  • There are general problems with slow loading of mesh & textures at the moment – see https://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Server/What-is-up-with-the-servers/td-p/3084966
This problem is only affecting some people & the problem appears to be with certain local CDNs. LL are investigating it.
If this problem started immediately after updating to Firestorm 5.0.1 and you have the same problem on all regions and you do not have the problem on other viewers (please check on the LL viewer – https://secondlife.com/support/downloads/) then it’s most likely to be a problem with your antivirus software being unhappy with Firestorm 5.0.1.
If you happen to use Webroot antivirus software, look no further – that is almost certain to be causing the problem.
    See http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/webroot

If not using Webroot, which antivirus & firewall software are you using?

Other wise seams to work okay with everything set to max and high fps for me, very nice work.

    Mr Winkler

    December 15, 2016

  • To disable imposters: Preferences -> Graphics -> General -> Max # non-imposter avatars -> move slider all the way over to the right to set at “No Limit”.

    Whirly Fizzle

    December 17, 2016

  • (apologies for my lateness in replying)

Ah i see, that makes no sense to me but it does work.
“No Limit” suggests no limit to how meny impostor av’s are displayed, instead of “No Impostors” which in my opinion would be at the left hand side of the slider starting with none and then increasing to no limit of impostors.
At least its not not displaying impostors when there’s only two or three around me.
My computer can handle meny avatars being rendered at once but even setting the max to the lowest limit of 1 it still turns everyone to impostors as soon as i am about 1 meter away from soneone, Its weird and feels very backward with the slider, but at least it can still be turned off.
As for everything else i have found no problems at all, actually i have noticed that mesh load failures seam to have decreased a lot for me which is always a plus 🙂 .

Thank you Firestorm team for all your hard work and happy new year 🙂

    Mr Winkler

    January 4, 2017

  • The behaviour you describe is correct.
The slider governs the max number of NON-imposter avatars, not the max number of imposter avatars.
So setting the max # non-imposters to no limit means you have totally disabled seeing any imposter avatars.
If the slider is set to 1, you will render only one single avatar as a non-imposter.

  • If you are on a Windows 10 system with graphics not supported on Windows 10, then you will need to apply the “Intel fix” – see http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_intel_fix_32bit

If this doesn’t help, on any viewer you can get to the login screen with, go to Help -> About Firestorm/Second Life/Viewer Name, click the “Copy to clipboard” button & paste all your system information here.

  • For me, this has been the easiest upgrade so far. I didn’t do a clean install, but did remove the old .exe file and left everything else alone. So far so good (perhaps I’m lucky).
Still haven’t figured out what all the new stuff is all about and haven’t had the chance to play with most of it yet but simple day to day usage seems to be as solid as ever.
    Good job.

  • Dear Firestorm
What HAVE you guys done?? I can now do things with ALM on and a 256m draw distance that were hard work with ALM off and a 96m DD!
After 3 days of heavy use and a lot of TP in and out of busy sims, this viewer has barely hiccupped. Thankyou so very much for restoring my SL!

  • it’s a real shame that you are making people upgrade. What does it matter that they can’t afford to upgrade their systems. We are gonna force them to. As far as I am concerned..it should be a choice and everything should work right…i guess i will be seeing a lot of headless avatars!

  • They have no choice. With Bento you either use an up to date viewer, or more and more AV’s will appear severely broken. LL likely learned a lesson with Mesh. They aren’t waiting 6 months for their users to get to use the new features again simply because third party viewers take their sweet time updating. It may not have been said quite this bluntly, but I have to think LL’s stance at this point is “Keep up or get out.”

  • It’s still early but over all a very good upgrade. I am a bit puzzled as to why the seconds have been added to the clock. It has a way of catching my eye from time to time. It’s a bit distracting at those times. Personally I would like to see a checkbox to disable that “feature” in the next upgrade. Again…over all…good job!

I wont be using the update until its fixed, I have never had such issues before.

  • I never had any issue with Firestorm, it always worked flawless. This new one seems stable, and im sure its good. The only problem i have is that media wont work anymore, and search dont work, nothing shows up. If i downgrade to the previous version, it works normal. I didnt mess up any settings, and i made sure to install the flash and all. What is the problem?

    Akiva

    December 21, 2016

  • If you are using Windows Vista then you may have problems with media functions on Firestorm 5.0.1. This isn’t something that will be fixed – you will need to update to Windows 7 or later.
If you are not using Vista then media functions including search should work.

The usual cause of this problem is that your antivirus software has deleted or blocked SlPlugin.exe or the CEF plugin (llceflib_host.exe) from running.
It could also be caused by a bad install where some files are missing.

To rule out a bad install, please logout of the viewer & uninstall the Firestorm 5.0.1 viewer the usual way through Windows Programs & Features in control panel and download the installer again from http://www.firestormviewer.org/downloads/ & run the installer.

If this does not help, make sure that your antivirus software is not blocking either slplugin.exe or llceflib_host.exe from running.
You should also manually whitelist these 2 files for good measure.
slplugin.exe is located inside the viewer install root folder by default. The llceflib_host.exe file is located within the llplugin subfolder.

If you still cannot get media to work, please file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) so support can help you.

  • Let me preface this with saying I have the Intel HD 300. Logging in has never been a issue, Memory leaks that seemed to get worse with each upgrade was. With the 5.0 64-bit version, I would have to reboot my laptop multiple times in a ten minute span of using FS. I swapped to another Viewer and the long story short, I swapped to their Intel HD Fix prepacked into it. So, I have to thank Whirly Fizzle for mentioning the FS version of it, even though I have not tried it (yet, will later this afternoon).

  • This really sad that i cant use Firestorm anymore. No answer, no fix, no help in support. Media not work, search not work, web to my secondlife not work (i use to post pictures in my profile before) and i did NOT change any settings. I checked about 10 times that my settings are right, and they are. This has never happen before, and i miss post photos, i miss be able to use the search function and not depend on having landmarks when i need to go somewhere, i miss media, i miss music, (again, i have the settings RIGHT, i did check x10 times or more) this really really bad, as i have getting used to Firestorm and liked it for almost a year now.

  • For me, this upgrade is useless. I know I have an old computer with an entry-level video card, but that’s no explanation for what I’m seeing. It looks like everything is rezzed fine at my home location, but the frame rates are all over the place – they’ll surge to 30-35 fps at times, then drop to 1 to 2 fps and repeat. At least 4.7.9 gave me resonably steady frame rates….

    Benwin Marlin

    December 25, 2016

  • Benwin, i totally agree. This update is absolutely useless. It made SL a pain. Media refused to start, (yes, ALL the settings was right, i did check x10 times, trust me) Search was disabled, i had to depend on my Landmarks och a TP, to buy LS i always got a error message the first time, the second time it usually worked. Music did not play, my web tab (My SecondLife) in my profile did NOT work either. USELESS!

Now im back on Firestorm 479 , and its a BLESSING!
Why? Because i almost got used to everything that i could not do in this new update, and now suddenly when im back on 479, it works flawless again. Media plays, web search, everything works. I can enjoy SL again.

Please do NOT discontinue the previous 479 viewer for G-D sake!
Never again will i download the new crap, and have at least 50% less joy and use of SL!

    Akiva

    December 25, 2016

  • Good luck with that, Unless you prefer Linden Labs calling the shots to force you to update, Maybe play SL: Offline? Then you don’t have the upgrade ever again.

  • I just want to say thank you to the Firestorm development-team for this update.

In the last version I had a huge issue with yellow ducks who appearing after one or two sessions. (indicator for mesh rezzing problems, also when mesh rezzes succesfull)

The only way to avoid this, was to clear the cache, to get a fresh copy of the information from the asset-servers.

But since the update to this version, the yellow duck was never seen.

Thank you, so much and a happy new year.

    Kraai

    December 28, 2016

  • It’s normal on any new viewer install to have a prompt from your Firewall to allow slvoice.exe.
When you are building, MSE is probably asking you to allow slplugin.exe – you will need to allow this or media functions (including search & web profiles) will not work in the viewer.

    Whirly Fizzle

    January 2, 2017

  • Do not download it, unless you have a brand new or almost brand new computer.

For me the new Firestorm version made it impossible to use media, search functions, (had to depend on TP and landmarks!) no way to post pictures in my profile web tab, since no internet worked!

All settings was absolutely right. Solution? I did go back to 4.7.9 and everything works again.

  • This was a great update, until I tried uploading textures, then suddenly 8 out of 10 uploads ended with “Unable to upload (texture name) due to the following: Error in upload request.” The updated SL viewer was worse. Now I’m going back to the previous release of FS, and hope i can upload again or my business is in serious trouble.

    Avari Carrasco

    January 3, 2017

  • Avari, can you test uploading on a different region just to rule out a region issue.
I don’t think this is a region problem however – there have been a number of people unable to upload textures on any viewer that includes the coroutines update and they all get the upload error message that you gave.
Please can you file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) so we can get your viewer logs after a failed upload attempt.
No one knows the cause of this problem yet but it’s isolated to certain systems, rather then the connection. I suspect it’s caused by 3rd party software installed on the affected systems but we don’t know what yet.

    Whirly Fizzle

    January 7, 2017

  • Whirly thank you for your answer!
I’m using Windows 8 on this computer. But since all the other versions, including this one im using now (479) is working without any problems, isnt there something that im missing in my computer for the new Firestorm, that is needed in order to show media and search? I read about Quicktime was no longer supported, but i have Java 8 and Adobe Flash player 24 PPAPI.

Im thinking that im missing some media player for this new version in my system, or that its not activated by default, since the firewall never caused any issues before?

    Akiva

    January 6, 2017

  • Windows 8 or Windows 8.1?
Tbh the viewer won’t have been tested on Windows 8 because no one should really be using that now, they should be on 8.1.
Web search should just work out of the box. The Quicktime plugin is no longer needed on 5.0.1 and the flash plugin is only needed to play flash media. You don’t need anything else installed.
Can you file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) and we will get your full system information and logs to see what’s going wrong.

  • for Firestorm Update 5.0.1

    http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/lag

Symptoms of client-side lag include jerky sluggish AO or movement.

There are many things you can do to reduce this, without having to ask people to adapt to you:
    . reduce your draw distance (do you really need to see 512m away?);
    yep will do so

    . turn on avatar impostors (this makes drawing of distant avatars much faster);
    maybeee

. disable atmospheric shaders (which serves to drastically reduce how much your computer has to render, as the sky alone is very graphics-intensive)
    no don’t, BS
    it renders all very ugly!

. if need be, inhibit the rendering of other avatars: Advanced → Rendering Types → Avatar – or derender them.

if ugly, yep will do so

  • This update is complete trash. I’ve done everything they say to do for the media fix. I’ve done a clean install not once, not twice, but 12 times in the last two days.

    Guess what?

    Still doesn’t work.

I’ve gone through my firewalls, I’ve uninstalled, cleaned my computer, and done fresh download and install and Nada.

    I’m on Windows 8.1.

I have an upgraded video card and am hardlined into my modem so Lag should never be an issue.

Yet, when I do all you have outlined above… I get ZERO media.

I can’t even look up stores through search.

    And I can’t hear music.

    This was a trash update.

I’ve used Firestorm since I’ve had SL and now I’m seriously considering getting rid of all of it because of this garbage.

    Bad update. Bad program.

Bad play. I’m severely disappointed by your reaction to our problem as well. More than once you posted ” Just look at the fix I posted earlier.” Like we are too stupid to have read through the thread.

    We’ve done what you asked…

    Our Viewer still doesn’t work.

  • Is there a way to permanently disable avatar complexity notices? I’ve set the “ShowMyComplexityChanges” to zero but it resets every day so every day I have to put the value at zero. Help??

    Niveajade

    January 12, 2017

  • Yes you can

To disable only the notifications reporting that other avatars may not render you or now everyone sees you correctly, go to Preferences -> Notifications -> Alerts.
In the top section, select “Warn me if my avatar complexity may be too high” & move this into the “Never Show” section at the bottom.

To disable the notifications informing you of your new complexity reading each time your complexity changes:
    * Activate the Advanced menu in the top menu bar with CTRL+ALT+D.
    * Advanced -> Show Debug Settings -> ShowMyComplexityChanges
    * Set ShowMyComplexityChanges to zero to disable all notifications.

Does that fix the problem when you change both those settings?

After doing so, my inventory showed up in SL viewer, but was still gone in Firestorm, I reinstalled Firestorm 5.01 and inventory showed up, however, my outfit gallery does not show up. I took pictures of all my outfits, so this is really bad. Does anyone know how to get outfit gallery back? I have to reset all my settings and everything. What a huge pain.
