Firestorm Release 4.6.9.42969!

translation services

‘Tis the season… for bug fixes!

We frequently hear from our users that you wish we would spend less time on features and more time on bugs, well this is definitely that release. With this maintenance update we bring you a few great new features but HUNDREDS of bug fixes and improvements! I’m looking forward to seeing if bug fixes really are as important as features based on how many of you update this time around!

Some feature highlights include…

  • Group ban functionality by Linden Lab
  • Search functionality for Preferences and Menu items.
  • Autoresponse can now include an inventory item
  • Displayed columns in radar now customizable
  • New replace inventory links option
  • Right-click mouse walk by Singularity

Far too many bug fixes and improvements to list… please see the change log which can be found here.

NOTES:

  • We highly recommended you perform a clean install this time around.
  • ATI/AMD video card users be advised. The latest driver offering 14.12 and beta drivers 14.9.2, 14.11.1 and 14.11.2 from AMD breaks rigged mesh rendering. More info here
  • Version 4.6.1 will be blocked in the new year.

With that, I will leave this blog post short and sweet so we have room for our BIG surprise announcement next week! 😉

Stay tuned!

  • Just dloaded the new release. Love the new features! Seems to be running very well so far. Thanks FS Satff! You all do such a great job! Thank you for all you do! ☻

  • the bottom row of buttons being visible in mouse view is pretty distracting, please add an option to turn it off like previous versions

    December 10, 2014

  • Eh, actually that seems like a bug. It doesn’t happen on 4.6.7.
    I filed a JIRA issue here: http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-15101

    Thanks for reporting it 🙂

  • I thought I cleared old Firestorm to clean install new. Now I get a message that Firestorm can’t “parse tree…” and then it crashes. I have Windows 8 and don’t like it, it is so hard to find things and follow your directions. I am not a computer geek! Thank you

    Cindy

    December 10, 2014

  • Cindy, that error message happens with a borked install.
Follow the instructions on this page: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall

If you get stuck, file a support issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) and support can talk you through how to do it.

  • More of a side-load to get group-ban if/when needed, but I expect to actually keep running 4.6.7.42398 most of the time. Why? Linux, 64 bit.

  • No RLV update. That’s seriously disappointing especially when the version in the last release was outdated when THAT version was released.

    Sharie

    December 10, 2014

  • Hey, I’ll take all the bug fixes over an RLV update any time. RLV isn’t developed by the Firestorm team nor is it from LL so it’s not always going to be up to the last minute version. I’m not sure if any viewer actually is at this point. Be glad they make any effort to include it at all.

  • \o/ WOOOT \o/
    You did it!
and its a wonderful viewer, maybe the best You ever did!
The new ‘search for pref’-feature i specially love.
Its maybe the most underrated and helpful one.
Can’t count how often i searched this&that (like where do i enable the chat-logging? Its under privacy. maybe ‘only’ two more years and i would be able to remember that 😉 )
    Thank You!

  • I for one am glad SL share is NOT included. We can already post to flickr or facebook from FS but the LL implentation is seriously lacking, you cannot choose a higher resolution than screen size so it’s not possible to upload a server scaled image. Keep it as it is, it works much better for those of us who like sharing pics.

    Mondy

    December 11, 2014

  • Hmm yes, you are correct about the Flickr uploader.
Facebook is the same as the Linden viewer – max image size is the Current Window size and you cannot choose to unconstrain proportions.
For Flickr upload however, Firestorm allows you to upload high res images larger then current window size and to use unconstrained proportions. The Linden viewer max size is clamped at current window size and no way to use unconstrained proportions.

    Whirly Fizzle

    December 11, 2014

  • Mondy, I filed a JIRA issue for this loss of functionality here: http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-15112

I guess we will cross that bridge when we come to the SLShare merge.
Hopefully this behaviour can be changed.

  • All fine so far but… movelock when pressing ctrl+alt+p is not triggering it.

    R0dz

    December 11, 2014

  • Make sure your Firestorm bridge is attached and working. Movelock is a bridge function.
Go to Avatar -> Avatar health -> Recreate LSL bridge.
    Does Movelock work now?

    Whirly Fizzle

    December 11, 2014

  • Nope, it DOES work when manually selected on Avatar—> Movement—> Movelock.
But its ‘shortcut’ does nothing. (bridge is always attached)

    R0dz

    December 11, 2014

  • Hmm I can’t reproduce that.
Can you file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) giving your system information from Help -> About Firestorm and it can be investigated further.
    Thanks!

  • Would update even though it’s mostly bug fixes– but *is a Linux 64 bit user* and it really takes wayyyy too much effort to get 32 bit FS/SL to run on 64 bit linux since a lot of the 32-bit compatibility libraries are getting to be harder to install, so really hope you get your library problems sorted out so I don’t have to sort out library problems on my own XD

    Lunatic

    December 11, 2014

  • A Linux 64bit build is being worked on 🙂

    Whirly Fizzle

    December 11, 2014

  • I’m glad a 64 bit Linux build is coming, but I have no problems running the 32 bit build on 64 bit Mint over the last couple of years through all the updates to both OS and Firestorm. I know that doesn’t help if you’re on a different distro, but at least for Mint, and probably Ubuntu and Debian users it seems ok. I do have 32 bit compatibility libs installed, but nothing weird or special.

  • Is there any possible way to have different colors for the vintage set up? That would be cool.

    drake1 Nightfire

    December 11, 2014

  • Yes it’s possible.
When you choose the Vintage skin under Preferences -> Skins, you will see the theme dropdown has just a “Classic” colour scheme.
Different colour schemes can be added for the vintage skin.

If you fancy giving this a try yourself, please see http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_colorschemecontest
You can even submit your new vintage colour scheme to Firestorm to be included in the a future release!

Thank you for addressing them instead of burying them under more features where they can destabilize everything.

  • Ladyy, Please can you file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) being sure to give a paste of your system information and your viewer logs from a crash on 4.6.9 and we can take a look at why you are crashing on anthing newer then 4.6.1.
That wiki page tells you where to find your system information & viewer logs.
Please dont wait until 4.6.1 is blocked to do this, file the JIRA asap.
    Thanks!

  • Completely unusable. Everything works up to login, but after logging in, UI appears and works, avatar name appears, but otherwise black screen, no objects or scenery renders at all, just empty black screen.

I’ll go report in JIRA as well.

    Whirly Fizzle

    December 11, 2014

  • Thanks, I resolved it. Just my dumb mistake, though it was odd.

I had updated my video driver but had not restarted X yet. I had been using Firestorm 4.6.7 while I updated the driver last night, and it was working fine. This morning I clean installed the new FS 4.6.9, and it had the issue when I logged in. I logged out, moved ~/.firestorm out of the way, put my old .firestorm back, and logged in with 4.6.7, and still had the issue. That’s when I remembered about the driver. I restarted X with the new driver, and both versions of FS work. I have no idea why – I guess FS uses the installed driver even if it’s not the one loaded in memory with X, and the two had a weird conflict. (Maybe not weird if you actually know what the code does… which I don’t.)

Anyway, all is good, love the new features I’ve used so far, and will cross my fingers that the one bug that was bugging me is fixed. Haven’t hit the condition yet. Cheers!

  • Same problem here – only a black screen after login – Nvidia card and AMD cpu – very dissapointing – Are users like us getting any attention or should we just give up?

    Tina

    December 13, 2014

  • Tina, this should’t happen. It’s impossible to know what is going wrong for you without more details and getting log files.
First thing to try is doing a totally clean install of Firestorm – see here for instructions http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall

If this dos not help, please file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) so we can get your full system information and log files.

  • I use a Mac and get the same, but ONLY THE FIRST TIME. Make sure to leave it alone for 10 minutes. It’s writing in a bunch of files in to the application folder about the program. If you leave it alone it will finish up and function normally, and shouldn’t happen again until the next new viewer install.

if i am using the build tool and Deactivate the ”Show Highlight” box and activate it again..the next time when i am opening the buildtool again the ”Show Highlight” is deactivated again..so everytime when i am closing the tool ”Show Highlight” box is deactivated

  • Do you have “Show selection outlines” unticked under Build (in the top menu bar) -> Options?
Changing the “Show highlights” tick box in the actual build tools window is a one shot – it will revert to whatever setting you have set under Build -> Options after you close the build tools window.

    Whirly Fizzle

    December 11, 2014

  • Well, I can’t see the whole build window. Therefore, the properties of an object do not show. I have looked everywhere to fix, and it is still not showing. Window size, ui, everything. Clean install, reset settings, nothing is working.

  • Good Job Firestorm! I be liking this update, YAY! However, I have have an issue not exactly related to the new update – not being able to buy Lindens. I get a little window saying that I have to set up a way to purchase on my SL home page. Thing is, I can buy L$ on my home page ok. I can also buy them in the SL viewer too. The problem started 13 days ago, I filed a ticket with SL of course but their answer was that they can’t help me, because I’m using a TPV. I tried a search to see if you have a JIRA for it but I guess I’m not putting in a good search string or perhaps I’m the only one with this issue. If you can point me to a JIRA concerning this, I’ll add my two cents there but if you haven’t seen this yet, I’ll file one tomorrow. Give me the nod, one way or another, Whirley. Once more, thanks for all that you do and other than this issue, it works great!

    pepys ponnier

    December 11, 2014

  • Pepys, we do not have a JIRA issue for this yet and it isn’t a known issue (no-one else has reported it yet).
Seeing as you can purchase L$ okay on the LL viewer, first try a totally clean install of Firestorm 4.6.9 (instructions here – http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall ) and do not change ANY settings away from defauts at first and test if you can buy L$.
If the clean install doesnt fix it, yes, please file a JIRA issue and attach your log files after a session where you attempted to purchase L$ and it failed.
This page tells you where to find your log files: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira#how_to_give_us_your_logs

  • With this new viewer, I can’t seem to keep voice on…it will only let me toggle it on while holding down a key. I’m really hoping this is a bug…

    Eliza Cabassoun

    December 11, 2014

  • Under Preferences -> Sound & Media -> Voice settings, make sure “Toggle speak on/off when I press…” is ticked.
    Does this help?
If you still need further help, file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) and support will be able to help you.

  • Some issues seem to be happening regarding left clicking some buttons on boards I’ve found. Have to right click and ‘touch’ for it to work. First time I’ve encountered this problem in a FS release. Will file JIRA. Otherwise, love the new features and it does appear more stable all around in the x64 version!

  • Nevermind, seems to have been an error on my fault, but I can’t seem to use Object View now in the movement window. It does not turn into a magnify glass anymore.

    Nyza Stillwater

    December 11, 2014

  • The object view problem is a bug in 4.6.9.
If you left click on your avatar after activating object view, it should then work correctly.
There will be a hotfix release, probably tomorrow with a fix for that bug plus a few others.

    December 12, 2014

  • Well, this new version seems to work well for me…I haven’t run into any bugs (yet). Yes, it IS a shame that the RLVa is not updated, it lags a few versions behind Marine’s now, but most of those updates are buggy, so it is probably a wise move. I do wish folk wouldn’t be so sniffy about RLV, it may not “float your boat” but it keeps a lot of us from drowning! Anyway plaudits to the devs once more.

    Ayesha Askham

    December 11, 2014

  • Um, does anyone else camera object view not work? It highlights like it is selected but it doesn’t work. I though it was my RLV but after disabling it, object view still doesn’t work. I’m pretty sure it functions for everyone else but I’m not sure what I am missing.

    December 11, 2014

  • Yoda, if you left click on your avatar after selcting object view, that should workaround the problem.
    Its a bug in 4.6.9.

  • @Jessica I found this one just seconds before release: ATI/AMD video card users be advised. The latest driver offering 14.12 and beta drivers 14.9.2, 14.11.1 and 14.11.2 from AMD breaks rigged mesh rendering.

What I found was unchecking the Hardware skimming seams to, be the work around for this problem with ATI graphics cards. The work around was found doing some research on the Wiki with this link. http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/ati#worn_rigged_mesh_goes_invisible

    animorf Kawadias

    December 11, 2014

  • Yes, this has been a known issue since the 14.11 beta drivers, which AMD unfortunately have now released without fixing the bug.
See http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-14871 – 14.12 Release ( plus 14.9.2, 14.11.1, 14.11.2 Beta) drivers will not render rigged mesh unless hardware skinning is disabled.

  • Question: What was the reasoning for moving the Bridge away from its own dedicated ‘bridge’ point to a HUD point, thus eating up one of the rather limited number of available attachments?

    Dark Wolf

    December 12, 2014

  • It spams the log of other viewers and there has been complaints about this, even from Oz Linden, so the bridge has been pro-actively moved to a regular attachment spot before it would have caused actions by Linden Lab.

Also: This does not affect the total number of attachments that can be worn. The number is always the same, whether the special bridge attachment spot is being used or not.

    Ansariel Hiller

    December 12, 2014

  • You guys ROCK!!!!!!!

    Kentochi

    December 12, 2014

  • I’m underwhelmed honestly. You have how many devs on the team, 20 or more? Yet 90% of the work is done by not even a handful people. We have the polish XML edits by furries and occasional little fixes from other people, but that’s it. Just look at your hg repo, it looks like one person (Ansariel) is pulling the most weight. That looks like management fail and explains why the viewer is so far behind. Yes i know LL release isn’t the most stable viewer, yet there is A LOT of work to for you guys, like bringing RLV up to date (who’s doing it? Ansa of course) or the many many MAINT fixes. What happened to the Multi Window viewer thing? Why are there no project viewers, like a HMD FS, why is there no innovation (except a few UI ideas), why is Firestorm the slowest Viewer out there FPS wise (maybe Niran’s is even slower?) There is so much more stuff you are just blatantly ignoring, but i don’t blame you, since Firestorm is basically a 1-dev-viewer nowadays. All the other devs just stand around and try to look important with smartass comments. Now we know Firestorm has been riddled with bad management since beginning, just please please guys, pull your act together, i know you can do it.

    boop

    December 12, 2014

  • Look around boop…
Singularity repo https://github.com/singularity-viewer/SingularityViewer/commits/master Mostly all Liru. They had a release in September and before that January.
How about Kokua, one dev. Nirans is of course one dev. Catznip, CtrlAltStudio… etc etc. Look at their release cycles. We are no further behind LL than anyone else with exception perhaps of Alchemy who is new and still only in beta.

The fact is, opensource developers are becoming harder and harder to find, especially active ones. That which motivates these special people has dwindled and this isn’t a management issue… its just the way things are going in general. Yes, we have inactive developers, quite a few but we’re not alone in that. Times are hard for everyone… so stop trolling.

    Jessica Lyon

    December 12, 2014

  • Except they aren’t rare, Jessica, they just don’t want to work on a viewer project that is being crippled by politics and large egos. Look at Cinders for example who left the project when she was denied a lead mac dev title after doing 50% of the work and Ansa doing 50%. Instead you got rid of all the lead dev roles. Sometimes you have to make “hard” decisions like dropping a title off a guy that isn’t contributing. It’s called giving an incentive, keeping people motivated. For most of the “good” devs, the fun in working for SL opensource viewer projects and catering to a larger userbase has died with the end of Emerald and the draconic TPV policy, people got scared off and stick to their private little projects now.

Nobody wants to waste their time on features for total beginners and get bitched out by their own userbase in return for not satisfying all their pubbie needs, unless there’s some kind of incentive.

I wouldn’t compare Firestorm to substandard ones like Singularity which has been pretty much dead for a long time now. Liru is more active at Alchemy too it seems. You guys are waiting for Kitty to finish RLV so you can finally catch up with LL, afaik she got tired of it all and is taking an indefinite break as well. All the TPVs seem desperately trying to keep up with LL’s innovation but more or less failing due to lack of manpower or competency. And i’m not even trolling, just speaking my mind.

  • @Ronnie, How is none of the Features working, They work for me. If they are all broken it be broken sense day 1.

Just beacuse yours don’t work dose not mean everyone else is included. My Viewer worked fine through the updates.

  • Yeah! What are these people doing to earn all the money we’re paying them?!?! I say we should give all the inactive devs a 50% pay cut, and give all the savings to boop as a reward for pointing out this terrible travesty. That’ll show those volunteers what’s what!

When boop fires up the ol’ IDE and starts cranking out patches all will be well, though.

    What, haven’t you started yet?

  • Attaching a 7seas invisible rod to right forearm will not allow me to detach later, says “it’s not a clothing item and I can not wear it”…
otherwise nothing worthy of notice, some good stuff has gone, some useless stuff now exists…but overall its good.

  • Hmm can you reproduce that problem again or was it a one off occurance?
Is anyone else having problems with 7 seas rods?
If you can reproduce this again, please can you file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) with instructions on where to get one of those rods and someone will take a look.
    Thanks!

  • I tried downloading the latest version. There so many added programs that it locked up my computer. I did not see any blocks for skipping their installations. Had to power off PC by depressing Power button as all other functions were frozen. Spent nearly 3 hours clearing unwanted programs from your zip file and then had to run a Norton Deep Scan to insure there were no virus’ installed. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!

  • Nolan, I’m not sure what you downloaded but it wasn’t Firestorm.
Where did you download the release from?
There are 3 places to get the official Firestorm downloads:
    1) From this blog page, the downloads section on the right here: http://i.imgur.com/0dPoQgC.png
    2) The downloads section of the blog here: http://www.firestormviewer.org/downloads/ which should look like this http://i.imgur.com/A9fAW7K.jpg
    3) From the wiki downloads page here http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/downloads which should look like this http://i.imgur.com/UwjCsu6.png

The download should be ONE file and only install the viewer. No “additional programs” are included in the download.

  • Our installer installs 1 ‘ONE’ application, “Firestorm”. That’s it, that’s all.

  • Why do you need to reply on a hit counter to tell if bug fixes are more important than features? 😛 Of course bug fixes are fucking important! and you need to do them more often, instead of releasing broken/hit-and-miss builds and ignoring bug reports.

Whats the point in features if none of them work?
    – Fix bugs.

  • Did you delete the option to export shape?
Cant find anything in Advanced -> Character -> Morphs and meshes.
In fact the Character tab isnt there

  • Shape export is in the same place it always was: Develop -> Avatar -> Character Tests -> Appearance to XML

  • you guys rock. The work put into it, and also the support, here in this forum is really great. This thing has bugs and i miss 64bit Linux, but is that a reason to forget good manners, education and respect?

  • Hi, Im a user for a long time of Firestorm and now – with the latest version – I can´t save my picks in my disk. I made a clean install and reinstall but the same problem continue. Please, help me. I like very much Firestorm but I need to take my picks and save them.

  • Laura, are you using Mac and are you crashing when trying to save to disk?
    If so, please see http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/mac_crash_upload
If the problem is something different, please can you explain in more detail what is going wrong.
    Thanks!

  • Had problems with everything in SL downloading very slowly after I bought a new computer with 8.1 windows & different graphics card. Did endless tweaks with some success but not by much. Not sure if the bug fixes had anything to do with such issues but seems to have improved something. Lol hey I’ll take it. Could just be a mix of my settings tweaks and the bug fixes together. Thanks for such a great viewer. My favorite to use. 🙂

  • Does Firestorm still support other grids? For example I just got into Inworldz and I’ve been trying to figure out how to log in with Firestorm. I really want to avoid having more than one viewer downloaded on my computer if I can help it.

    Completely lost

    December 16, 2014

  • Yes, Firestorm supports OpenSim & other grids as long as you are using the OpenSim compatible version of Firestorm.

  • Ok, having run the current version pretty much every day since it came out, I’ve noticed…..nothing. It may be a little less prone to crashes. I see less times when it looks like it was going to crash but then recovers (using the 64bit version).

It’s hard to tell if there’s any real performance increase since getting the new version coincided closely with the addition of an SSD to my system which definitely has made a difference. For raw FPS and responsiveness, the official LL viewer still wins hands down. For stuff like flying or sailing inworld, that’s the one I use. Otherwise, I’m using Firestorm.
