Firestorm Major Update 4.7.1.45325

Firestorm Major Public Beta 4.7.1.45325

This is considered a major update due to the sheer volume of changes, improvements, features and bug fixes in this release, but we are releasing it as a public beta on account of some attachment bugs we picked up when merging LL’s AISv3 code and some RLVa issues. Aside from these, though, most testers found this to be a big improvement over our last release. Linden Lab is aware of the attachment issues and is working on releasing code to address these problems, and we will have those fixes with a follow-up release still to be announced. The JIRA issue for this is HERE.

This release brings us to near-parity with LL. While an unprecedented amount of work went into it, it will not count against the three-release rule, since it is a public beta, but it is fully supported by our support team. We highly encourage you to try it, but you’re welcome to roll back if you are unhappy with it.

For a summary of all the major new features and improvements in this release, please see Inara Pey’s Firestorm 4.7.1 Blog post.

Just too much for a highlight list! CHANGE LOG

Enjoy!

The Phoenix Firestorm Team.

  • should i make a clean install or is a normal reinstall also ok?

  • Always, always, ALWAYS…do a clean install.

    H.G.

    May 3, 2015

  • W.A., a clean install is always recommended. You can, however, back up your settings first using http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/backup_settings then follow for instructions on how to clean install the viewer http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall . Once done, log in and use the backup settings link to restore your settings. 🙂

  • Why releasing a viewer which contains a major bug ? (which exists in the official viewer as well).

    Dahlia Orfan

    May 3, 2015

  • There are always going to be new bugs. If we waited to release until all bugs were fixed, there would never be a release 😉

    Whirly Fizzle

    May 4, 2015

  • i think Dahlia Orfan mean that the release should have been delayed until THAT bug was fixed. I for sure will not update until this is done and the version are a public releace, not just beta.

    Lisbeth

    May 5, 2015

  • Whirly’s point is right, but you have yours too.
HTTP pipelining helps a bunch, for example, and it’s around since October. So I’m glad that finally Firestom has it. Firestorm is the most used viewer and if it takes an half year each time to implement new features, it delays improvements in the grid seriously. But a viewer with serious issues and in beta test shouldn’t be released as “Major Update” and as main download and with the notice to all to upgrade. At most there could be hurried releases when servers changes require adjustments before a stable release is ready.
But of course most of the annoying problems here comes from LL codebase. It’s kinda hilarious to ask to a team of people working for free on their spare time to fix the mess made by a company and its team of paid professional coders (who probably would point their fingers to their managers); however I don’t think it’s LL who is putting their hearts on SL viewers. Firestom fixes something (e.g. merchant drop box works on Linux with Firestorm, while with LL Viewer it never worked, for years!) and makes the viewer more stable, but LL should come with something better first. Their code comes with innovations and improvements, which is great and very welcome, but they often break other things and/or add awful race conditions, that they “fix” either with ugly workarounds (worsening the user experience) or they never fix them. After a long wait of many months, Firestorm is released anyway with some of those ugly issues, each time. Now we have a snapshot floater that’s a pain to use on laptops and that requires also more clicking: HUDs and attachments that detach on sim crossing; long delay when we rename items and folders; and since a while, dragging an open folder inside another one messes the tree view hierarchy, until you open and close the folders; as usual mesh vehicles become half or entirely derezzed at sim-crossing, prims aren’t rendered at teleports until you right click them and so on. Honestly, quality wise, any SL viewer is such an utter mess that they shouldn’t even reach the beta phase: it’s late alpha at best.

I’m glad and grateful however that FS team tries, working for free, to make Firestrom more stable and more usable than LL Viewer and that they seem to care for Linux too.

So I have a suggestion: perhaps you could keep to release a viewer every 6 months or when you feel it stable and satisfactory enough; but meanwhile release a monthly open beta viewer as a separate download for those who need the new improvements and Firestorm features and can cope with a less stable viewer (you could give it a different name, such a Firebreeze, lol, if you worry it may affect your crash stats or Firestorm “brand”)

    Pointer

    May 6, 2015

  • Firebreeze! I like that 😀

    May 6, 2015

  • have to agree that maybe a public beta for this was a bit too soon. The viewer is great, lots of great changes, general performance was great. BUT, adding ONE thing and 9 attachments came off. Having your odds and ends dropping off left and right is a rather annoying bug. So I went back to the previous version. Can’t wait till the attachment bug is fixed, would love to go back on this new version. Those who do not mind putting themselves back together now and then won’t have an issue with the beta.

    Pete Wa-hya

    May 14, 2015

  • Congrats to the FS team! This is a lot of work and big leap forward for the viewer. LL has been advancing their viewer pretty quickly of late and I am sure keeping up is not easy, but it is a nice problem to have.

  • I’ve been using Firestorm for years till many things were broken a year ago (uglier ‘milky’ water, which at one point had been solved for the Mac version, but then reappeared again, slower UI responses, random camera jumps upon alt-mouse click, mouse wheel not responsive at lower wheel rotation speed—as a builder, these are unacceptable).

I tried the latest beta just now. It seems the camera jumps are gone, and the UI is a lot more responsive, but is STILL has this mouse wheel annoyance on my Mac. I still can’t use this for building, since that requires precision mouse wheel scrolling.

See vid here (on an older viewer, but it’s still the same bug on 4.7.1.45325). Yes, clean install, different mice, modem/router power cycle, “but it works on my Mac”, submitted on the Jira site, yada. No avail:

  • Unfortunately, this upgrade is causing massive RLV attach/detach issues. I tried the FSUseAsi3Api to False, but it’s still prety broken, attachments falling off, or not attaching correctly. Pretty much unusuable for a RLV user. Sorry. Keep up the good work.

    Chetar Ruby

    May 13, 2015

  • I’ve decided to hop over to the Restrained Love Viewer while I wait for Firestorm to sort all this out. Oddly enough, that one isn’t having attachment issues at all. It’s also on the most recent version of the RLV API, with the newest features. I already miss some of the cool Firestorm things, but with RLV unusable in Firestorm I see little choice. I’ll keep an eye on Firestorm to see if they can get back on track. Fingers crossed.

    Craig Berry

    May 22, 2015

  • Suggestion: This should not be a pestering level release (the viewer informing me to upgrade) until attachment issues are resolved. Just my two cents. It’s completely unpredictable when it comes to RLVa doing attach/detach commands.

    Chetar Ruby

    May 4, 2015

  • This, a thousand times this.

You DO NOT release a BETA as part of your primary download branch – no exceptions, no excuses, don’t really care how ‘stable’ it may be. Your last beta? Never bothered with it even when people were pushing it to be downloaded and tried to ‘fix’ a few bugs here and there.

I’ll stick with the version i have until such a time as you have a non-beta release.

    Dark Wolf

    May 4, 2015

  • Yeah, pushing this release to everyone was a real show of incompetence. This should have never shown up as an upgrade firestorm notice on 4.6.9. Very disappointed, causing support nightmares for people who just thought it was a regular stable release. Very very disappointed FS team. Get rid of the upgrade firestorm message on 4.6.9, you’re causing ALL of us headaches with this.

    Chetar Ruby

    May 4, 2015

  • I have to agree here. The upgrad notice needs to be used ONLY with stable releases that are counted in the supported releases. Using this to push a beta version, regardless of support in the support group or not, is irresponsible. You are going to be looking at a large number of support hits with any release you drop on users, so why the use of the upgrade notice for a beta level release, especially one with a fairly large issue that is worthy of an added warning? I see no sense in effectively bludgeoning your support staff with more requests than necessary, much less upsetting users who may very well have a higher likelihood of being effected by the attach/detach bug with this release (as indicated by the previously mentioned extra warning). This is especially vexing since many of them may be less savvy users that expect you will use the nagging upgrade notice more responsibly than is indicated by your current use of it. I find this use of the upgrade notice highly disappointing. Chetar Ruby and Dark Wolf are 100% correct in their suggestion that this kind of use of the update notice be stopped as even with the added warning it will result in added issues for users and increased workload for your support personnel.

  • Good thing I read the Jira first. Re-attaching HUDS almost every time you tp?
LOL… don’t think so. This is not a major release then but a major step back. No matter what bugs are resolved… I can live with all those as long as I don’t have to worry about detaching of HUDS.
Totally silly to bring out a release with a bug like that.

  • While on the last update it said first “64bit Linux comes later” and later turned out to be never, it says now again ” comes later”. is there a “later” or should i say goodbye to FS and focus on viewers that support 64bit Linux?
I rather prefer a definite “yes” or “No” for that support, rather than a “later” that never occurs. Thanks in advance for clarification

All I can tell you is one of the devs has been working on it over the last few days and its being tested internally.
It’s having problems with webkit and currently has a nasty crash (see http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-16000).

    Whirly Fizzle

    May 5, 2015

  • That crash can be documented and shouldn’t hold back a major release the second time running. Since most linux users will want the 64 bit version in this day and age, they are essentially stuck with FS 4.6.7 or whatever the latest FS version is supporting linux 64 bit.

  • 64 bit is extremely stable for linux it has more texture memory. You need to pull the code and build it yourself. The FS Team has more work to do with the huge SL changes. It builds very will in the gcc 4.6 to the 4.8.2 . but do not try the latest grab the pre realease code. and your in linux it only takes me 15 min to compile the viewer. My Partner and I are the only ones I really tell . Really do not need want unreleased stuff out there till tested.
I tell you what this linux 64 bit build is awesome. I was amazed how the new nvidia gtx 960 kepler GPU loves this viewer.

If you can’t keep up you certainly can’t expect the other runners to slow down for you. C’est la vie. I feel for you, but that won’t help with this problem. It is just the inevitability of change and progress we all face in one way or another. • Microsoft is abandoning XP support as well (after about 14 years, no wonders). If you don’t have other choices, you can still use Linux. It’s free as free beer and free as free speech, and with it you aren’t locked in and you don’t have to follow what a company dictates. You adjust it to your needs, rather to adjust yourself to Microsoft needs.
It’s available for any taste and device. It has better performances, it’s more stable and it’s way more secure than Windows XP and there are distros that have lower hardware requirements than XP. The most popular distros are easier to install than XP, and you can dual boot anyway to give a try. If you don’t know how to install an OS, you can ask for help to a friend or someone, that would also help in case your hardware isn’t well supported and needs some tweaking. The cons are that it has some differences as well as the graphic user interface (but in KDE – e.g. Kubuntu – the GUI is quite similar), and if you neglected open and/or cross platform software, such as Gimp, Firefox, Chorme, Opera, Libreoffice etc, you are locked in Windows, else you are quickly at home.
So an ancient hardware isn’t entirely out of options, but don’t expect XP being supported by anyone forever.
    It’s (almost) dead, Jim.

    Dark Wolf

    May 14, 2015

  • 8.1 is a major improvement over 8, I myself was part of the ‘!@#$ Windows 8’ crowd when I saw previews and downloaded the beta back in the days it was closed testing. My newer computer came with 8, and on first bootup when creating the main administrator account and initial finalizing, I played with it a little bit, and then went to the Windows Store app, got 8.1, it’s a free upgrade for 8. So nobody should ever be mentioning ‘8’ alone as the only path. 8.1 is actually not bad to work with and there’s a lot you can disable or just ignore. With it you can toggle to sign on to desktop mode, so you’ll only ever see the metro/app menu if you hit the windows key or intentionally click on the ‘start’ button. You can uninstall every single app down to just some core service ones like the store and I think calendar and their cloud sync. Once you get that far, it’s pretty much running like Windows 7 but faster and smoother for everything else. Plus once you’re upgraded to 8.1 you can also get the free open beta of 10 RIGHT NOW, and then when it comes out if you have a legal 8 serial, you get free upgrade it sounds like. They’re handing out 10 free to fully licensed windows users. Windows 7 was fairly unforgiving in hardware requirements, they did a very good job optimizing 8.1 and 10 on minimum requirements. I ran them both on a barebones system with scrap parts like 1.8ghz proc, and 2gb ram and they’re smooth. If you can run SL in the first place on the hardware, there’s no reason not to update your OS unless it’s controlled hardware like a business environment, and at that point you probably have no business being on SL.

    Sekioh Sachs

    May 21, 2015

  • The current computer is not mine to upgrade – hardware or Operating System. It is a shared unit.

While all of that is quite nice sounding, 8.1 IS 8 (sorry, no – it’s not an ‘upgrade, it’s a bloody service pack) with only a few of the biggest mistakes ‘fixed’. 10 fixes far more of them (Metro? Nope! Welcome back ‘classic’ Start menu) while maintaining the few actual improvements they made.

10 is also free to users of 7 – same ‘restrictions’ apply.

Meh, either way, it’s going to be costly to get my personal computer up and running so that I do not need to share one with anyone else.

  • Windows 7 takes less resources and runs faster on the same hardware as XP. If you can’t afford a new PC, Fine. Win7 is still an option. Sorry to say that XP has been UNSUPPORTED by MS for over a year now. Continuing to run XP which has MANY known vulnerabilities at this point means that there is a good chance that your computer is already hacked and are operating as a botnet node. I sure as hell hope you don’t do any online banking. Running XP while connected to the internet makes you a public nuisance.

    Sharie

    May 5, 2015

  • Ah, I needed that laugh, no really I did. What you describe is a risk any unprotected machine takes when connected to the Internet or when using the crapware that Microsoft pushes as part of their Windows operating system.

Funny thing, hardware isn’t the only expense when building or upgrading a computer – the operating system has to be considered as well.

So, you planning on forking over the cash to allow everyone to either build or upgrade their computers and stop being a ‘nuisance’? No? Take a seat then and quit talking out your posterior.

    May 7, 2015

  • That’s actually quite cute! See, there are these things called security software – you know, Antivirus, Antimalware and most recently Antiexploit.

If you are running any machine without these, you are quite foolhardy.

Oh and hey, where did I say I intended to stick with this operating system? Hmm, nowhere at all! I am presently stuck with it – shared computer and all. I don’t decide what operating system gets installed on it.

Like I said before, take a seat.

    Dark Wolf

    May 8, 2015

  • Well, that tells me that your argument that people need to either support old hardware or buy them new hardware is bunk. Do you enjoy shooting yourself in the foot, or what?

    DoomRater

    May 13, 2015

  • Seriously, you are really that dense?

Your entire argument has been concerning the operating system – that is software side. I have responded to that specific ‘argument’ repeatedly and reminded you time and time again that the very tone of your arguments implies that you’re running your machine with no security software of any kind,

Now you’re trying to tie that in to the hardware?

Well now, let’s see here … The rig I have to share (thus, I cannot change out the operating system even if I could afford a modern Windows operating system designed primarily for desktop computers – meaning no to 8/8.1 – or wanted to swap out to linux even) More than meets the requirements for running Second Life on the hardware side, the oldest components being the PSU and one optical drive.

The cost of building one myself – with the hardware that would be required to run every program and game I have decently as well as what I’d like to run in the foreseeable future – is going to cost just shy of a thousand dollars.

This is money that, even were I to cut out the very little ‘personal’ bills I have (not utility based) would take well over a year or two to amass and in so doing, put me at risk of having what income I do have being reduced or cut out entirely.

So no kid, I haven’t ‘shot myself in the foot’ – you’re being dense and quite obtuse.

    Dark Wolf

    May 14, 2015

  • WIndows 8.1 is actually far more scalable and forgiving on older hardware than Windows 7. 8.1 can run on as little as 1 ghz processor and 1 to 2 gigs of memory. I know that is very hard to believe but please search around, and I’ve seen it with my own eyes. 7,however, will be supported for many more years to come and anything at this point is worlds better than XP. XP was great but people really should be transitioning on from it.

  • I am surprised and disappointed by both this “public Beta” and Whirly’s response above. As a full-time RLVA user and, until now, a faithful FS supporter, I have to say that the AIS3 bug introduced is a total “Game-breaker” for me. Really, are RLV users just another insignificant minority of users to be cast aside when LL click their fingers?

  • This release basically brought back all the issues that the amd 14.9.2 Beta driver had, mesh attachments going invisible, textures not loading, etc etc.
Running a r9 290x with the latest amd drivers, (15.4 Beta), switching back to the previous firestorm version and no issues at all, only happens with this new release.

    MrBallsack

    May 4, 2015

  • Rigged mesh should not be invisible if you are using the 15.4 beta.
You mention texture loading issues as well as mesh – it’s possible you are having a problem with Pipelining which is new on 4.7.1. It’s known that a small number of people have slower texture and mesh fetch with pipelining enabled.
Try this on 4.7.1 and see if things improve:
    * Activate the Advanced menu in the top menu bar with CTRL+ALT+D
    * Advanced -> Show Debug Settings -> HttpPipelining -> Set this to FALSE.
    * Then relog.
If this fixes the problem then just keep HttpPipelining set to FALSE.
If it does not help, please can you set HttpPipelining back to TRUE and file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) so we can investigate and get your logs.
If disabling Pipelining helps, please let us know here.

  • Usually I would instantly try a new release. But this attachment bug completely kills it for me. I’m wearing the LULU Collar & HUD system and automatic detaching of one of these would completely bork my SL experience. To bad, since all the other changes would be totally worth the update. But not until this major bug is completely fixed.

    Vanny Richez

    May 4, 2015

  • Vanny, you may not be affected by the attachments falling off on TP bug. The majority of people are not affected but a significant number are – hence the beta status and the warning.

A bit more background about this bug:
    * This bug isn’t new, its actually really really old.
    * There are 2 main problems with attachments on region crossing and neither are new problems:
    1. Attachments may fall off and may or may not reattach themselves a few seconds later.
    2. Attachments may “ghost” after a region crossing – on your screen you will still see the ghosted attachment, however observers will not see it. The attachment has fallen off serverside. If the attachment is scripted, the scripts will no longer function (this is temporary). You will not be able to detach the ghosted attachment, you will need to relog to fix it.

    * Since the AIS3/SSA polishing code went into the viewer, these attachment problems appear to be affecting a larger number of people.
    * We ran an interesting test with our preview group who were testing 4.7.1.
** First we gave them a build of 4.7.1 with AIS3 enabled.
As expected a fair number complained about the https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-6925 bug who had previously been unaffected by attachment TP problems on 4.6.9.
** Then they were given a build of 4.7.1 with AIS3 disabled.
Those people who had problems with AIS3 enabled on the previous build were fixed. However, now different people were affected by BUG-6925. Those people were fixed by enabling AIS3 again.

So, in conclusion, the increase in the problem on 4.7.1 isnt caused by AIS3 as such, it seems to be something else in the SSA polishing updates.
Also interestingly, a fair number of people complined about attachment falling off on TP on 4.6.9 and on earlier builds – if you are an RLV user, you may have had attachments unlock after a teleport – same bug.
Some of those people reported they were fixed on 4.7.1 when they have had this problem for years.

tl/dr – This bug seems to be a race condition and many things determine whether you are affected or not.
The code changes in the 4.7.1 viewer are certainly causing more people then normal to be affected.

If you *are* affected by it on 4.7.1 you can try the following and it may well fix you:
    * Activate the Advanced menu with CTRL+ALT+D
    * Advanced -> Show Debug Settings -> FSUseAis3Api -> Set this to FALSE.
    * You dont need to relog after flipping this setting, but relog just to be on the safe side.

If you are not having any problems with attachments after a TP, please do not change the FSUseAis3Api debug setting, leave it set to TRUE.

  • You have a watch on https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-6925
    See Vir Linden’s comment.
Part of the problem is serverside and not viewer.
The viewerside problem should hopefully be fixed in Big-Bird (please try that viewer Chetar, seeing as you can reproduce the problem easily on post-AIS3 viewers. If your attachments still drop off on TP, now is the best time to report it on BUG-6925 and attach your logs).
The Big-Bird changes will hopefully be in Firestorm soon for testing.
Linden Lab are working on the serverside problem.

  • It’s no longer possible to move outfit folders into subfolders within the main “Outfits” folder. I ended up moving my subfolders from Outfits to Notecards, and now I can’t move them back anymore and my inventory is an utter mess. Please help and release a fix for this soon!

    Ishtara

    May 4, 2015

  • Ishtara – this isn’t actually a bug.
The Outfits folder should not contain anything apart from standard outfit folders created by the viewer when you save an outfit.
You should never have been able to drop any subfolders into your outfits folder – the fact you could was a bug.
Linden lab fixed this bug and we merged in the fix.

There were complaints about this behaviour change on the LL JIRA after the fix, for example see https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-7338
It is unlikely this behaviour will be changed to allow dropping subfolders into the outfits folder again because doing so can cause problems.

If you wish to use nested folders for outfits, I suggest you use the Clothing folder to do this.
If you still want to put your outfits back to how they were then you can use 4.6.9 to do this.

Anyone who does not like this behaviour change can comment on http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-15603 – this issue requests the return of the old functionality.

    Whirly Fizzle

    May 4, 2015

  • Thanks, that is really helpful! So I can just move all my outfits into Clothing or a new top level folder and retain the functionality, including re-editing and saving outfits. I just tried it and everything works fine. But I’ll comment on the JIRA too, because I think there are a lot of people like me who have hundreds of outfits and would like to keep things organized. Thanks again!

  • I am a little confused. If the showstopper BUG that FS now has incorportated into 4.7.1 really IS BUG-7714, how come it is NOT fixed, since, in the JIRA, Whirly clearly states that the “Big Bird” viewer has fixed the issue. Why on earth release a viewer with such a serious BUG for RLVa users, when LL have the bug fixed? OK so they have not released to code to the TPV (assume). We have waited this long, could a little longer have done any harm? By the way I assume that BUG-6925, which I experience first-hand, is not YET fixed, either by LL or FS?

    Ayesha Askham

    May 4, 2015

  • BUG-7714 isn’t a showstopper. If it was a showstopper, there would have been no release.

Yes, you were one of the people with attachment problems on teleport on 4.6.9 and earlier (see my reply to Vanny above explaining that this bug isnt actually new, its just affecting more/different people).
I don’t believe you have actually tried 4.7.1 yet Ayesha (from FSE chat). You may find you do not actually have the problem on 4.7.1.

  • I don’t know Rex.
The LL viewer will run on Linux after the tools update – it just seems to be certain systems having problems crashing on launch.

Yes, Oz did announce at the last TPV meeting that LL were no longer working on Linux fixes themselves but they were happy to take fixes from open source developers to get Linux working well again in their viewer.

Several of the Firestorm developers use Linux, so I’m hopeful the next release (which will have the Tools update) will at least have a working Linux 32bit build – but I can’t make any promises there, it’s too early to say and it isn’t my decision.

  • I’ve been eagerly waiting for the new release and I’m gutted to see that there is still no 64bit linux version.

I’m running Linux Mint LMDE x64 based on Debian upstream not Ubuntu and prior 64bit versions of Firestorm ran perfectly but the last 2 releases are not available and the 32bit versions fail to even start.

I tested this newest 32 bit 4.7.1 release with a full complete clean install and it opens a window but it stays black and never loads the login page for me while the 4.6.7 x64 Beta works 100% without problems.

I’ll stay on 4.6.7 till the next full release or as long as I can before they block that version. Hopefully a fix comes soon for those of us that prefer 64bit Linux.

    Julia Merosi

    May 4, 2015

  • Julia – your graphics defaults should only have been reset on first launch on 4.7.1. If you change your graphics preferences, these should persist between sessions.
If this is not happening and your graphics settings are being reset each launch then something is wrong.
If you are still having a problem with this then please file a JIRA issue and someone will take a look – http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira

Just to note – if you are hopping between 4.6.9 and 4.7.1 then it is expected behaviour that the graphics will reset each time because you are swapping between a viewer that uses the old gpu_table (4.6.9) and the new Benchmarking (4.7.1).

  • I tried the new beta viewer, but it presented a real problem for me. I’m not sure if it’s a deliberate, would-be ‘improvement’ or a glitch. I like to store my outfits according to type. Consequently, within my Outfits folder, I have created a number of sub-folders – Formal Wear, Casual Wear, Swimwear, etc. In previous viewers, you could easily drag outfits into such sub-folders. Alas, no more! In the latest beta viewer, if you try doing that, you receive an irritating error-message informing you that you ‘cannot drag a folder into a folder’ or some such, when all you’re trying to do is drag an outfit into a folder. Consequently, I uninstalled the new Beta viewer and clean re-installed the most recent official version, which works fine. I hope this feedback helps.

  • Thanks for your response. I’ll take you up on the idea of registering a protest! I don’t know how this idea got about that nesting subfolders within the Outfits folder can ’cause problems’. I’ve been using SL for years and have pursued this practice more or less from the beginning. I’ve never once had a problem. Not once. And if this facility was a mistake from the start, how come ‘Create a New Folder’ is clearly there in the menu? Did a ghost type it? I would imagine most SL residents organize their outfits in this way. Otherwise, looking for a particular outfit is like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack. I suspect this ‘fix’ by LL is going to annoy a lot of residents in a major way.

  • I have not tried the updated beta version. But this concerns me.
I use sub-folders inside the outfits folder to organize various links, and I mean links… not a file, to clothing in the clothing folder, the originals. These are created manual by coping the links to the clothing I’m wearing in the Current Outfit folder and pasting them in a new folder as an outfit and named. In this way I set up my own outfits in a manual process. It also allowed me to mix and match clothing choices without duplicating a shoe or a piece of clothing. It gave me the ability to do a quick change and create variations in outfits. This functionally I want to keep. It would be a major blunder to have to move these folders to my own Outfits folder in the directory tree and abandon a folder called Outfits as a work around.
Do I use the automated process of making an outfit… No. Don’t plan to. I prefer my manual method and safeguards to be sure it works and I know where it is and where I saved the folder of links.

    Steve

    May 5, 2015

  • With this new update, I am having all sorts of problems. First, I started getting errors about permissions. Secondly, I am experiencing tremendous lag. I will try to move and my avatar would not respond until after 3 to 5 times trying. Once I am moving about, I would walk and then stop, my avatar would continue walking for several meters and then I would end up where I told it to stop moving as if it did not continue to move me after telling it to stop moving. I am getting logged off a lot. If the internet goes out (happened once) or if the region crashes, my viewer literally crashes (I get a box pops up asking if I would like to submit a bug report). I would log on half the time completely naked and then things would start to attach after maybe 30 seconds to five minutes (this is not good. especially on a PG based region and if I were in public at the time as this could get me banned or reported for being naked in a public PG area). I am getting tons of chat lag. Instant messages sometimes do not go through. I would open up a group chat and half the time, I would get an error that it could not open up chat (forgot the exact message). Also, talking about opening up groups, when I would view who is in chat, it would only show me even if there are others in chat. I could go on and on. I did not get any of this on the previous version of Firestorm. Please, fix this so that I could lead a productive Second Life. Lastly, I am writing scripts. This is hindering my ability to successfully test the scripts before put into use. I did do the suggestion about turning off pipelining. However, that did not work as I still had problems…. HELP!

  • The warning mesage at login about permissions I suspect is: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-9066
You can ignore this, it’s harmless and also happens on the LL viewer.

The rest of your problems sound like connection issues to be honest.
However you said you don’t have the problem when you go back to 4.6.9, so I suspect possibly your antivirus software.
Do you use Webroot antivirus? We tend to have problems with certain antivirus software every release, especially Webroot causing symptoms very similar to what you would see with a poor connection until the viewer install folder and cache folder are whitelisted.
If you are still having problems with this on 4.7.1 only, please file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) and support will help you.

  • Thanks for the update.
I realise this is a bit of a minority interest, but I had been hoping that the UI would allow direct access to the Experience Tools UI that the Official Viewer has.

It’s a particular issue for scripters who work on projects in the Experience Tools beta tests, since we can’t compile experience tools scripts using Firestorm. We have to relog with the Official Viewer to work with them. But it also affects all users because, without the UI, I think it means they have to relog with the official viewer to do anything with experiences (like search for them or leave them).

    Innula Zenovka

    May 4, 2015

  • Innula – LL havn’t released Experience tools yet.
The main non-beta release (which should be fairly soon) will have Experiences and VMM included.

Yes you are correct that a user will have to relog on the Experinces viewer to search and leave an Experience. Users of the default LL viewer will have to do the same since Experience support isn’t in release yet.

    Whirly Fizzle

    May 5, 2015

  • Thanks for the reply, Whirly. I hadn’t realised that Experience Tools are not in the Official Viewer yet — they’ve been in the Release Viewer for so long that I hadn’t realised that it hadn’t made it to the Official Viewer yet (or, rather, I thought that’s what I was using — I normally only use it when I’m working on Experience Tools builds).

If it’s not in the Official Viewer, that’s different. I am glad it should be in your next release — as you probably know, editing an experience tools script with a viewer that’s not experience-tools-aware silently removes the script from the experience, thus breaking it. It’s horribly easy to do, and it’s utterly baffling why your script has suddenly stopped working properly.

  • I am one of the ones that have been having this problem on the last several versions of firestorm. I would teleport from one region to another to find that I am completely nude (embarrassing), parts of my outfits are missing, or a hud or two have detached (which is minor as I have a system set up to quickly re-attach what detached).

    May 5, 2015

  • I see. I do TP a lot and I hardly ever region cross. I have noticed on TP that some attachments don’t show up, but it happens very few times. I just thought this was typical SL problem stuff and didn’t pay much attention to it. Thanks for info, Whirly.

  • Whoa – installing this BETA automatically uninstalls the last RELEASE? I really, really would have appreciated knowing that before I did the install. They’re put in two different directories, there’s no reason for this. Rolling back.

    Buckaroo Mu

    May 4, 2015

  • I automatically uninstalled it. It is NEVER a good idea (unless you are using the official viewer where it auto-updates itself) to update your viewer w/out uninstalling the previous one first. The only exception to this rule is if the install gives you a choice to install it in another folder and then you have the choice of which viewer that you wish to load.

    Anonymous

    May 5, 2015

  • Yep, the installers (both 32 & 64bit) give you an option to choose a custom install path.
People often miss the choice on the Windows 64bit installer though – I admit it is easily missed.
When you run the Windows 64bit installer, there is an “Options” button and you can set the install path there.

  • personally i am NOT happy with the new snapshot screen. Clicking on other screens like inventory or chat will not show inventory or chat untill i manually close or make the snapshot screen smaller. This is very inconvenient. It would be much better if the snapshot screen just disappears to the background when clicking on inventory or chat. Or maybe i am doing something wrong and its just a setting i have to change?

    xanishia

    May 5, 2015

  • You are correct. The snapshot floater is coded to stay on top of all other floaters.
This isn’t new, its always been this way. The old snapshot floater behaved in the same way.
However, because of the increased size of the new snapshot floater, this is no doubt why you are finding it a problem now.
Please see http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-15586 for the request to make the new snapshot floater resizable.

  • After installing the new update yesterday I experienced 2 Windows crashes, or what many call it, the BSOD (aka Blue Screen of Death). I decided to revert back to the previous version without any problems afterwards. Also, while getting a feel for the new Preferences overhaul I noticed the option to trim the Resident name off of someones avatar is no longer available or it doesn’t work. I remember seeing the option in the previous version when you go to Preferences > General > check Trim Resident off Legacy name. Could I have missed this option in the new update? Does it have anything to do with the SL date of a new Resident? I noticed on my Contacts list that some have the Resident last name while others don’t. Other than the 2 issues I mentioned I had no other problems.

    Frank

    May 5, 2015

  • I had a blue screen this morning myself. I also had the viewer stop responding and then crashed after that. This is NOT typical of a firestorm build.

    Anonymous

    May 5, 2015

  • Frank & Anonymous
    Regarding the blue screens.
Do either of you use Norman Antivirus suite? Thats Norman, NOT Norton.
Norman antivirus does not play nicely with Pipelining – it can cause a BSOD when the viewer is launched if Pipelining is enabled.
If you do use Norman antivirus suite, please see https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-8711
The viewer will also be generally very crashy when using Norman if pipelining is enabled. Pipelining is enabled by default on 4.7.1 and the feature didnt exist on 4.6.9.

When exactly did your systems blue screen?
Did it happen while you were logging in, logged in or when Firestorm wasnt even running?
Also, are the BSOD definitely only happening when running 4.7.1?

If you are using Norman Antivirus you will have to disable pipelining or switch to a different antivirus software.

Did either of you check the windows memory dump from the BSOD?
    What was the faulting module?

    Whirly Fizzle

    May 5, 2015

  • No. I use AVG AntiVirus. I did not check the dump however, the only different variable was the new version of Firestorm. Also, to the answer of the other question, Firestorm was running at the time.

    Anonymous

    May 5, 2015

  • Ok, if you have another BSOD while Firestorm is running, please file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira).
Grab the windows memory dump from the BSOD too. If you dont know how to do this, please ask.

    Whirly Fizzle

    May 5, 2015

  • @Whirly Thanks for your response.

    – I use Panda Anti-Virus.
    – I got the BSOD maybe 5-10 mins after installing 4.7.1.
    – BSOD only happened on 4.7.1.
    – Not sure where to find ‘windows memory dump’.
    – Faulting Module?

    Frank

    May 6, 2015

  • Ahh interesting you use Panda.
We had a report from a preview tester using Panda which showed all the same symptoms as the known Forticlient antivirus problem with Pipelining – see http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-15916
This user wasn’t reporting BSOD but the viewer was instantly hard crashing with Pipelining enabled.
There are 2 confirmed (as in we could reproduce it) antivirus softwares that do not work well with Pipelining – Forticlient and Norman. BSOD’s were only reproduced with Norman antivirus.

Can you try this please Frank and let me know the results:
    * If you do not have the Advanced menu enabled in the top menu bar, enable it with CTRL+ALT+D
    * Advanced -> Debug Settings -> HttpPipelining -> Set this to FALSE.
    * Clear cache and relog.
    * Keep Pipelining disabled for now and let me know if you are still getting BSOD.
    * Can you also let me know if you are *only* getting the BSOD while 4.7.1 is running.
    Thanks!

    angeleysoflove

    May 5, 2015

  • After you teleport, are your mesh body parts actually falling off?
Check in your invetory to see if they still show as worn and ask observers if they still see them.
If the body parts are actually falling off and you have to reattach them, then you are no doubt being bitten by the attachment bug on teleport.
If your mesh body parts are just turning invisible after a teleport and eventually rez back in then this is something different and unfortunately does happen a lot when entering busy regions especially. Even with the pipelining changes, mesh can still be very slow to rez in mesh heavy regions. I suspect this is going to continue to be a problem for a long time.

There is a bug on Windows 10 with AMD cards having a funky unicode name in DirectX. The viewer uses DirectX to get the name of the card and the card name is stored in settings.xml under LastGPUString.
The gibberish card name causes settings.xml to be unreadable by the viewer.
This *should* now be fixed on the lastest build of Windows 10 using the latest driver that windows 10 gives you but you must manually uninstall the buggy driver first before you reinstall the latest one or the buggy card name will remain.

    stephie

    May 5, 2015

  • Stephie – are you attempting to drag items into your Outfits folder or a subfolder in there?
Any loose item (object, Body part or wearable) you add to your outfits folder *will* paste as a link. The outfits folder must only contain links.
That isnt actually new behaviour. Any loose item you added to outfits on 4.6.9 and earlier will also have been added as a link.

You cannot drag/copy/paste pictures (snapshots or textures) into the outfit folders – they are not wearables.

If the problem is something else, please can you give more details.

The “hover height” option is brilliant, thank you. I do have a small niggle and this relates to the way the “worn” option functions now. It seems to no longer keep a history of the folders/items and removes the folder/item from the worn list when you detach an item under the “worn” tab. I found this to be a useful function when trying on demos etc. Thank you for your hard work and effort. Most people seem to forget this is a labour of love.

  • I’m really disappointed in this release. I was not able to use the 4.6.9 release because of it’s instability issues. I had hoped that a new major release would have addressed these problems. However the constant crashing when I attempt to cam to someone else (within whisper distance) or take a photograph indicates to me that I’ll have to wipe this out and reinstall 4.6.7 again to be able to use SL.

    Kerri Fegte

    May 7, 2015

  • Kerri – did you seek support for your instability problems on 4.6.9?
If you dont ask for help, nothing is likely to improve for you in future updates.

Without more info I can only guess what your problems are but, Ill have a go.
You say you crash a lot when camming and when taking a snapshot.
This hints that the problem may be memory exhaustion.

Are you using a Mac? If so, there is a known Mac file picker crash and you will crash when attempting to save a snapshot to disk – or any other operation which opens the Mac file picker.
If you are Mac then see http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/mac_crash_upload
This workaround will stop the crashes.

The crashing while camming is likely to be memory exhaustion.
If you are using Windows XP, there is probably not much can be done to help there.
If you are not XP but you are using a 32bit operating system then again there is probably not that much we can do to help apart from check your settings to make sure you have nothing enabled which will cause memory bloat (like full res textures or a very high draw distance).
Memory exhaustion on 32 bit systems is unfortunately pretty common, especially if the account has a large inventory.

If you have Intel graphics, make sure you are using the latest driver version. Some of the older intel drivers had a severe memory leak.

If you file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) someone from support will help you.

  • Well my comment is going to be very simple, since a few people have been yapping about bugs. As Jessica posted, before this viewer came out, that it was asked for a few brave souls to step up and join the preview group. It would be of more help to the Firestorm Dev’s if they had, more input on things as the larger the test group the more bugs that get caught. so that is pretty simple folks.

Now the other thing I am going to say, is that there has never been an Operating system, much less a program that has ever been released that was 100% bug free. As that is simply just not possible. As there are always going to be too many variances from system to system, to create a program that will function the exact same way that is 100% bug free. This has a lot to do, with the how computers components are constructed as a whole. And as a former IBM, ECAT employee, I can tell you that things like computer parts get slightly misaligned. As well as oven tempters fluctuate through out the day, with the backing of individual chips and stuff. As well as with the mother boards, and other computer cards as a whole. And this is not even accounting, for the customization that is done in and after the construction of a single computer.

So the only way to create an operating system, or program that was 100 percent bug free, would be to hand code it from scratch to fit the individual computer. and that is just simply too time consuming to do for anyone. And totally unrealistic, to expect of any computer programmer, to be able to achieve 100% functionality with Zero bugs for anything they code. As it may work bug free on their system, but not yours.

  • The Firestorm team isn’t a software company. They’re a group of unpaid volunteers cobbling together code from various sources to make a viewer with more options and tweaks than the “vanilla” LL viewer it’s based on.

  • We are actually testing a new x64bit beta..still needs more testing and fix some issues with Linux libraries.. this is going and I spread this information in 4 Linux chat forums in March 2015..
We need more testers to support Fs Linux beta projects, cause as you know there are many different distributions to cover, so if you are really interested in soon having an official x64bit Fs Linux release, you could be big help http://www.firestormviewer.org/wanted-brave-early-adopters-and-testers/ Thanks for your interest and comment.

  • I installed this latest version 2 days a go and have had so many annoying issues with it.
The long term issue with attachments coming off after a TP has gotten worse.
The Windlight settings change to region default sometimes even though I have that switched off.
I accidentally deleted an outfit and then restored it. The folder went into the root, not the outfit folder and I couldn’t move the folder into its proper place. I had to make a new outfit then copy all the links from the old one into the new one.
It took forever to install (saving off 8 accounts for avatars on adni and aditi) and I’m loath to waste more time changing back.
You need to improve your alpha testing regime as this is a major fail for me.
When will these issues be fixed?

    Lucky

    May 8, 2015

  • “The long term issue with attachments coming off after a TP has gotten worse.”
Yep, it’s worse for some people on 4.7.1.
The viewerside part of the fix which is currently being tested in LL’s Big-Bird project viewer) will be in the next release of Firestorm (about 1 month from now).
LL are still working on the serverside part of the fix. This parts out of our hands and we need to just wait.

“The Windlight settings change to region default sometimes even though I have that switched off.”
That shouldnt happen as long as you have the viewer settings set correctly.
I havn’t been able to reproduce this on 4.7.1 so if you think theres a bug and you have steps to reproduce, please file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira).
If that can be reproduced then theres a good chance that will be fixed for next release.
Noone has reported this yet so we need a bug report from someone who can reproduce it.

    “The outfits thing….”
Not actually a bug but an unpopular behaviour change. The fact that you could ever move folders manually into outfits was the bug.
    See https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-9209
    and
    http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-15603
This behaviour may possibly be reverted in the future.

    Ciarra

    May 9, 2015

  • Webroot is causing the usual problems on 4.7.1 (we have this problem every release until Webroot update their virus definitions…).
Webroot can cause constant viewer freezes where the viewer goes into “not responding…” mode plus super slow texture and mesh fetch.
What you need to do is whitelist the viewers cache folder with Webroot. I’d also advise whitelisting the viewer install folder and the settings folder just for good measure, but its the real time scanning of the cache folder which appears to cause the problems.

  • Loading textures is visible *way* faster than before and uses less CPU time. However as long as textures are loaded, it’s almost impossible to move, except you set the Network to the absolute minimum. IMHO HTTP Pipelining should be (at least) disabled on default, until there a way to prioritize the movement information.

    Zenity

    May 10, 2015

  • Zenity, if you believe your problem is cause by Pipelining, then you can disable it to test.
If you do not see the Advanced menu in the top menu bar, enable it with CTRL+ALT+D.
Then Advanced -> Debug Settings -> HttpPipelining -> Set to FALSE.
    Then relog.

we can NOT recomend this public BETA … many many errors … in interest list, texture flickering, particle visibility and other display errors. I make a downgrade to the previous release.

    Ito Hotaru

    May 10, 2015

  • There shouldn’t be any new bugs related to the interest list code on 4.7.1. There are of course plenty of old bugs with it.
Texture flickering is also not a known new issue on 4.7.1 – if you have Intel graphics, make sure you are on the latest driver version. Some old Intel drivers can cause severe world view flickering.
Particle visibility – yes possibly you are seeing a new bug there, see http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-16094
This appears to be a side effect of the flashing white alpha particles fix.
It would be helpful if you can file a JIRA issue for the other problems (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira).
If noone reports them then they won’t get fixed.

  • I would like to say I rarely leave feedback on new updated releases of the firestorm viewer unless i’m truly happy or seriously upset with it’s performance. This happens to be one of those times. While I like the new look of the camera and some of the added things… I did not like the fact that I had to wait 30-45 mins for anything to rezz, if they rezzed at all. I had the new update for two days and I have logged in and out about a hundred times per day to simply trouble shoot the loading issue i was having. Like wise the teleporting is off and failed very often which is highly disappointing and annoying. I would try to teleport to my home or store (which i visit often) and it would not allow either. I would black screen with a the teleport loading bar showing no progress then disconnect every few teleports. I have since reverted back to a more stable version of the viewer that I am happy with. I do hope you can work out the bugs because the new interface is nice… it’s just really disappointing load and tp issues. good luck FS team I have the utmost faith you will do right by us and release an amazing stable version of this beta test 🙂

I was so bogged down and lagged, I could not even type, much less move. While trying to play music on Youtube, while the viewer was running, It caused my sound card to start skipping out on me. Not really sure what happened, but I loved it for the day it ~did~ work for me. Unfortunately, I had to go back to the latest complete release.

  • Ok, I’ve kicked the tires some more with this release. The ‘fix’ Whirly suggested regarding the debug setting has reduced the frequency of detaching items. It still happens and is still a problem. I hope the update to fix that won’t take another 6 months.

Ok, with the bad stuff out of the way, the good. This version (64bit Windows) is noticibly more stable. The merging of the newer LL code means much faster loading and rendering especially after a region cross. I seem to be getting somewhat better rendering performance. I find I can leave higher settings on when I fly aircraft without adding undue lag. Memory use is still the highest of any viewer I’ve tried, but the update hasn’t seemed to add any memory leaks so it hasn’t become an issue for me.

Overall, I like this release. I really don’t blame LL for getting on your case about getting some of their improvements incorporated. I’m surprised they didn’t do so sooner, because they should have.

  • I love the changes in this update~ The reorganization of the preferences and how fast the preferences load now makes me super happy. I have been experiencing the attachment bug but it’s no biggie. I only have one complaint, and that’s the awful memory usage.
I have not changed my settings for textures or draw distance, so I don’t understand why it’s using 5GB of memory.

I might file a ticket if this persists because I have 6GB of ram and this is way too excessive.

    Mielikki

    May 12, 2015

  • 5GB is pretty excessive yep – please file a JIRA issue: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira

    Whirly Fizzle

    May 12, 2015

  • The 64 bit viewers all will run up to 5 gigs of ram use when I am at huge fashion shows or a sim like Franks with 80 avatars. the 32 bit never goes that high. Linux version. At no time does it become unstable. 5 gigs of ram use is nothing today for large programs.
After coming home away from everywhere the viewer will settle in at around 4 gigs of use. Here the thing the cpu use is very low. This means it not working the system hard. At no time have there been a crash. Linux viewers only.

    Lord Drakeo

    May 14, 2015

  • Something has changed with the way mesh renders. Prior to this release, you could always right click on a mesh that looked like it hadn’t finished loading and it seemed to give it a kick in the butt and load immediately. Now that doesn’t work. You can still zoom all the way out (until you can’t see anything) and then zoom back in and that specific mesh which was deformed looking will now be loaded. It doesn’t work all the time, the right click method was much easier, but even having to do that says there is something wrong with mesh rendering in the first place. Please at least bring back right clicking to fix meshes.

    b

    May 12, 2015

  • I’ve always found it hit or miss whether a right click on a deformed worn mesh would fix the problem. I find the zooming out and back trick works best.
It sounds like you are seeing https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-6803 (or one of the linked related issues).

If you are finding mesh loading time is poorer on 4.7.1 then on 4.6.9 then it may possibly be Pipelining thats causing you problems.
You can disable Pipelining to test.
If you do not see the Advanced menu in the top menu bar, activate it with CTRL+ALT+D.
Then Advanced -> Show Debug Settings -> HttpPipelining -> Set this to FALSE and then relog.
    Does this help at all?
If you seee no improvement, please set HttpPipelining back to TRUE.

    Tay

    May 13, 2015

  • The viewer cleans up broken links automatically now. That was part of the SSA polishing fixes from LL – you shouldn’t ever see a broken link on 4.7.1.
You mention using the replace links feature – if you want to replace a set of links to an older item now, you should replace before deleting the original item.
If you would like to see the automatic purging of broken links changed into an option then please file a JIRA issue – http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira
We did have another complaint about this change too and it’s a valid one.

    Whirly Fizzle

    May 13, 2015

  • I can see how cleaning up broken links could be a benefit for many, but I, too, used “broken-links” to note if an outfit might have something missing (such as shoes) so I could replace them before I wore it or to see which shoes had gotten broken so I could find the same ones. You cannot always tell if deleting an item will break a link–for example, if you delete a folder or multiple items instead of doing, say, one shoe at a time, you will not get the pop-up. Nor if you rezzed a no-copy item to work on it.

  • There seems to be a problem with SL sounds in the 64bit vesion. If there are many “overlapping ” in-world sound sources and triggers, the viever seems to get stuck in some kind of “loop” state, and not only in-world sounds but also the UI sounds replay incorrectly and repeatedly. Apart from that and the lmown, LL code based “attachment” bugs there aren´t serious problems so far.

    Whirly Fizzle

llaudio/llaudioengine.cpp(1946) : 2015-05-15T00:29:50Z INFO: LLAudioData::load: Not able to allocate a new audio buffer, aborting.

It did take a good 10 mins longer to reproduce on 4.6.9 though, after following the same path through the region – possibly coincidence but maybe not.

There are a LOT of audio sources on Glint and the audio buffer is getting full. Once it’s full, the bug will reproduce.
The symptoms are the same as https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-28101.

I love the inventory option where you can sort your inventory by “older than” for all those old items I had sitting in my inventory since 2008 lol. I also like the “Money Tracker” I haven’t had an opportunity to see how that works yet but I really like the new features for this update. The only thing is when I did crash at that sim it didn’t prompt me to send a crash report like I usually will do, I would think that would be important as we are considered the so called “brave” ones for testing out this Beta Release. • this beta install works well for me, the only point I would raise is the new snapshot floater, yes I know you can << the preview image but what a piss around having to do that because the floater is just so big and covers so much screen space you cant see the screen you want to actually look at for the picture in the first place, it seems ridiculous to me to have a preview that large when you have the whole screen to look at anyway, the old smaller portrait aspect floater was handy to see framing, this new one is just a PITA.

  • Seriously?

Renaming two folders and running uninstall on Firestorm is too much effort? A downside to having it built in means that you could inadvertently trash your logs etc. whereas if you rename the folders they are still available in the case of a misstep.

  • The beta update as a whole works great except for one little glitch that keeps happening for me. Every time I TP in or out of a super busy sim, all my attachments disappear. Hair. Clothes. I end up with just alphas remaining. LOL. Is there a fix for this?

**Sidenote: I had no preexisting viewers DLd on my computer, as it is a brand new computer and I only downloaded the beta firestorm version. So this install was as clean as it gets to a brand new system.

  • Welcome to the the reason this is a beta release. If you read back there is something you can try with the debug settings that MIGHT help but it may not. It’s an LL bug and being worked on. When I know I’m going to be crossing sims a lot (sailing or flying), I boot up the LL ‘Big Bird’ beta viewer which has the viewer fixes for this problem.

  • I know the Phoenix Firestorm Team wants people to contributes to test new versions of the Firestorm Viewer, but I do not think replacing a more stable version by a Beta version in the official downloads page is a good idea. Why not simply add a synved-tabs-1 ID content to the downloads page down below the first one for Beta releases instead so people have the choice?

Going through Google search to find the older versions of Firestorm Viewer for a downgrade after being tired of testing the Beta version and experiencing all the new bugs is a little bit annoying.

Do not get me wrong but, that is a little but unprofessional. :S When I release a Beta product, I always give a stable version and a beta version on the same page so people have the choice. And many companies do it too so I do not see why Phoenix Firestorm Team would do differently just to make things more complicated.

  • Vixie, see http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-16100 (Firestorm JIRA) and https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-9353 (LL JIRA) for this bug.
This bug has different flavours & causes.
If the Appearance panel shows “there are no items in this outfit”, go to the Outfit folder in inventory and expand it. If the outfit folder in inventory contains all the outfit parts, this should fix the problem.
If the outfit folder within inventory really is empty then there is something in the outfit parts that is “bad” in some way and has failed the AIS3 checks.
One known cause of this is if you have anything attached to the Bridge point on your avatar.
In inventory, expand the Current Outfit folder. If any attachment shows as attached to the Bridge point, remove it and attach it to another attachment point and then try to save the outfit again.
If this doesnt help, go to Avatar -> Avatar Health -> Reset default female (or male) avatar, wear the outfit parts and try to save it again.
If you keep having this problem with saving different outfits and nothing is attached to the Bridge, then best thing to do is file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) so we can investigate what item is causing the problem.
As a last resort workaround for now, you can activate the Advancd menu in the top menu bar with CTRL+ALT+D, then Advanced -> Debug Settings -> FSUseAis3Api -> Set this to FALSE. Your outfits will then save normally.

    deviantdollie

    June 10, 2015

  • Most cases of missing inventory just need a cache clear.
Preferences -> Network & Files -> Directories -> Clear Cache.
Then relog into a low lag region & wait for your inventory to fetch.
If that doesn’t help, see http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_missing_inventory

    Julie

    June 14, 2015

  • While I enjoy some of the new features, the freezing, black screens, serious lag etc have caused me to go back to an older version of FS that crashes often, but is still better than this beta.

As a venue/sim owner, I am very open to feedback and try my best to balance aesthetics with a smooth running sim. Both before and after installing this beta, the simulator runs between the occasional 0.998 and 1.000 and the FPS is 45.0 with an occasional 44.9, so it isn’t a server side issue. Also, my pc is a very new custom rig that rocks. Before the update I didn’t experience lag in SL on this pc.

Of course, every once in a while one gets a complaint from someone saying the sim is too laggy…for their 8 year old pc or if there are too many system-hogging avatars.

But since 4.7.1-45325 was released, we receive very regular complaints. Finally, after one of our performers had to do his show without being online, he noticed that FS was taking up a minimum of 25% more of his pc resources. Since then, we all have seen this and are recommending people switch back if they are having issues.

  • When I open an item and copy the contents to my inventory, it no longer automatically expands the folder containing the items that it just created. It used to do this before the beta, which saved me some clicks and some time. If I’m opening items I want to use them or look at them right now, so it stands to reason that the new folder should expand automatically.

Is there an option to return it to the old behavior or do I need to go back to an old version?

  • This release has caused me to have to switch to singularity, due to random BSOD, I’ve tried a clean install, I’ve also updated my own personal drivers for my machine. Only program that crashes my PC

    Marc

    June 25, 2015

  • Marc, best thing to do is to file a JIRA issue (http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/file_a_jira) so we can get more information from you and the blue screen error codes and windows minidumps.
One possible cause of BSOD on 4.7.1 which wouldnt affect 4.6.9 or another non-pipelining enabled viewer is that your antivirus software is having a fit over pipelining. Norman antivirus suite (Norman NOT Norton) is known to cause random BSOD when running a pipelining enabled viewer and several users of Panda antivirus have reported that too (though it has never been reproduved internally with Panda. It has been reproduced with Norman).
You can test if Pipelining is the problem:
Activate the Advanced menu in the top menu bar with CTRL+ALT+D.
Advanced -> Debug Settings -> HttpPipelining -> Set this to FALSE.
    Clear viewer cache and relog.
If this helps or if it doesn’t it would be really good if you can file a JIRA issue so this can be investigated, especially if disabling Pipelining stops the BSODs and you are not using Norman Antivirus.
    Thanks!

  • Any new program especially one that clearly says it is a beta program is there for the purpose to help the developers fix the bugs. Many of the issues that are affecting Firestorm came from Linden Labs own code which in and of itself has had several glaring bugs for many years, and are starting to show themselves again.
In order for us to help track down your particular issue, please file a bug report with as much information about errors as you can so that it cam be addressed, many of your issues may already be on the radar for fixes.

I just keep crashing again and again, and it’s getting annoying. If I say quiet sometimes I can avoid the crashing, but if I TP somewhere else, I will crash.

I’m on a iMac, 3.5 GHz, intel core i7, 32GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096MB. OS X 10.10.4. I’m using the 32bit version. Have done the clean install at least 5 times. I have a fiber optic connection. And from crash to crash I get the error temp_data_size>0

  • I’ve been reading through the comments. I’m still using FS Release64 4.6.5.40833. Lately I’ve noticed a lot of lag when rezzing mesh avatars and/or clothing as well as mesh objects. Is this a new issue with SL? I also have a HUGE giant inventory and wondered how that effects performance in SL.

I should probably upgrade to FS 4.9 but wondering if performance would improve with that version and how so — especially with this mesh lag stuff I’ve been experiencing along with textures slow to rez as well. I’m sort of at the if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it stage — and I heard all sorts of issues with 4.9 and AMD cards until AMD relased the beta driver fix.

I just upgraded the GC driver to the AMD 15.1 beta version which is supposed to fix attachment issues of 4.9 version which I didn’t have those before with 4.65 and the older driver.

With regard to this new release, given the bugs mentioned about attachment issues, the snapshot window resize issue and what would be a big problem for me, crating sub-folders in OUTFITS for organizing the folder outfits into various categories. I don’t want to try the new 4.71 beta version but am curious (sans these issues) if it would run better on my machine and how much better 4.9 would run than 4.65.

  • Th recent problems you have been seeing with slow mesh & texture loading are most likely to be either a region issue (if the problem only happens on one region) or a connection issue or possibly a problem with your local CDN – hard to say without more info and seeing your viewer logs.
There have been some vague grumblings lately about general region performance, including slow mesh/texture rezzing in the comments on https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-9647, but I don’t know whats going on there I’m afraid. Need to wait for LL to look at that JIRA issue.
You may find your problem is improved if you update to the 4.7.1 beta, which uses pipelining for texture & mesh fetches, which is much faster for most people. There will be a new release out in a couple of weeks though, so you may want to wait until then to update.
Regarding the invisible rigged mesh problem on AMD systems – you should update to the new Catalyst 15.7 release, which has this problem fixed: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+7+-+64

The snapshot floater resize problem is fixed for the next release – you will be able to switch between the old style vertical layout with the small preview at the top and the new larger horozontal layout with the large preview: see http://gyazo.com/ce2fce6cfb53f76a67e144f66b7e088a

The problem with not being able to subfolder within your My Outfits folder – this is http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-15603
LL have a fix upstream for this problem and that fix has been added to Firestorm ready for the next release.

So, all in all, I think the best thing for yourself would be to wait until the next release is out and update then – it shouldn’t be too long now, rough estimate I’d say a couple of weeks or even less.
As for general performance, I really can’t say. You should get comparable performance with 4.6.5 but it’s really a case of update, see how things are and then contact Firestorm support for help if you are having problems.

The example looks just like what I’m seeing, but previously I could save to disk, then play with the shots on my computer while enjoying the large edge-to-edge format on my monitor. Now everything is in the middle of the monitor display with WIDE white margins on either side, which used to happen only AFTER I cropped a shot. I’ve tried all the size formats available, but the margins are always there. I hope there’s a solution.
