Firestorm Major update 4.4.0.33720

Firestorm Viewer 4.4.0.33720 with Server Side Baking Support

Not only is this a major update with loads of new features, as well as performance and stability improvements, but it is also a necessary upgrade for you if you want to be able to render avatars correctly when Linden Lab throws the switch for Server Side Baking (appearance). Because all Firestorm users will need to upgrade to this release, we have put it through unprecedented development and testing with no fewer than three levels of Quality Assurance: internal testing, Beta testing and our new Preview Group testing. We truly hope and expect this to be the best release we have ever issued. Grab the downloads from our Downloads page and enjoy!

Some of the new key features we think you will enjoy are listed below. But this is only a tiny fraction of what’s new. For a complete list of changes and known issues please see our change log

OpenSim

We have spent considerable time on this release adapting Firestorm for better compatibility in your grids and hope you will put it to great use! Some of the key changes are listed below.

  • OSSL/AA syntax highlighting for scripters
  • OpenSim Lightshare support
  • Better hypergrid jumping support
  • Greatly improved grid manager
  • Saved usernames from any grid always show
  • Near complete support for AuroraSim
  • Brought back things like client phantom, restore to world, etc., for use on grids that support them
  • SL-specific things like Merchant Outbox, pathfinding, etc., hidden while on OpenSim grids
  • OpenRegion settings support
  • Fixed build tools
  • Settings/logs stored separately for avatars with same name on different grids
  • Lots more…

Phoenix Users

We have done everything in our power to develop skin/setting combinations to make Firestorm look and act as close to the V1 interface as possible. We’ve also created a new Tutorial Video here to help you transition to Firestorm, and we have changed even more in this Firestorm release specifically for you. Once LL enables Server Side Baking on the server you will have to upgrade to a server side baking capable viewer. I hope that you will choose Firestorm, but if not, please know that there are other third party viewer options available to you on the Third Party Viewer Directory. We have honestly done everything we can to accommodate your needs as best we can, and should you decide to move to another viewer we do truly wish you the best.

Sincerely,

Jessica Lyon and the Phoenix Firestorm Project Team

  • This is all GREAT news! THe only major missing thing is OTR support. I know a new dev has been assigned to this (Cinder?) and that it’s a major feat with LGG not having much time due to RL lately, but please pull this off if possible. Thank you for the great work, and offering a “usable” viewer to the SL community with much flexibility and customization. For more info on OTR please see the following JIRA: http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-1349

  • Hey guys, congrats on the update :D

Just wondering though, is there anyway to get the old minimap? Or at least make it so that water appears blue on it again? I know it’s not an important thing for most people, but I use that so when I take aerial photos of sims I can actually line them up with the landmasses, and then you can put the texture on a prim and throw a script in, and viola, interactive map :D

LOVE the temporary derender feature btw, been waiting ages for it :D

    April 22, 2013

  • h.. two features lost with server side baking are temp uploads and the popular avatar height offset feature found in TPV’s. LL has taken steps to design their own avatar height offset as a compromise, please see http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_height_offset for more information. And please pass that around!

  • Congrats to the team on a new release. Looks like you have made some great improvements alongside a release of the SSB code. I am VERY happy to see FS adopt the new minimap as it makes vehicle travel MUCH easier. My quick preferences panel has been customized, and it works very well (the video was indispensable). I removed a number of items I don’t need and added the ability to toggle autoplay of media on and off. I am not a FS user normally, but I have a feeling that FS may be one of the few viewers to keep up with the changes coming from LL. Regardless, nice work and good luck with what I am sure will be a crazy amount of support.

  • This has totally locked me out of SL.
I took the opportunity to clean my PC before installing so I reformatted the HD and re installed the winXP Sp3.
No possible trace of SL or Firestorm on the PC.
Installed this version and it gets to Initialising VFS and sends a Crash log.
    Summery:
    Clean install
    Graphics drivers up to date
    OS up to date
    Firestorm wont even initialise.

p.s. I spent an hour trying to create a jara entry and gave up in frustration, I can’t join online support because I cant get online, and this is such a new release it wont be in the wiki.

    foneco zuzu (@ZZBottomHL)

    April 23, 2013

  • Well I gave it a try but it crashes out after a minute to a black screen, sound remains.
Nvidea gives error asking for quality to be reduced.
Phoenix runs on Ultra with no problem shame something that is supposed to be better will not.
Going back to Phoenix which runs on top setting ok and I can’t remember when that crashed. Know it is to die soon (this week?) so then will use Singularity or Cool.

    Brent Jarman

    April 23, 2013

  • The dedication to the project is really commendable for the entire Phoenix team, and while they’ve done a great job to bring V2/V3 viewers closer to players, I won’t be checking it out, not out of spite or anything; simply because my computer can’t handle SL that well anymore.
Ever since the entire SL slowly started to switch to the V2/V3 viewer models, I’ve seen nothing but the performance drop. Sure, it looks prettier and all, but there is over 50% difference in favor of Phoenix on the pretty much the same settings that I can’t deal with to make me switch to Firestorm; the same settings some people would consider to be VERY low and unbearable. I’ve stuck with Phoenix as long as I could, but I’m afraid when Lindens flip the kill-switch, that will most likely be the end of my Second Life.

I wish you all the best in your SL future.

    Keth

    April 23, 2013

  • The Lindens ain’t flipping any switch to deactivate Phoenix Viewer, it’s the Firestormers who ain’t updating the viewer anymore. They could update it but they don’t want to. I’ve been using Singularity since the Phoenix Viewer started giving me error messages on everything from group-join notifications to map-prim teleporting and it runs just fine.

    Wolfenstein Sequoia

    April 23, 2013

  • If they’re doing something that hinders its usability, then they are flipping the switch for Phoenix, regardless whether the team want to keep updating it or not. I understand it must be a great burden and a hell of a lot of work to maintain both versions, so it’s not surprising they’ve chosen the newer one. After all, it’s easier to work with, instead of having to port bits and pieces that might not even work. What’s bugging me is the ~50% observable loss in performance for Firestorm with almost the same settings. I am not a demanding player, to be honest. I’m quite happy if I can run things on medium settings, I don’t need ultra super high quality with ray tracing shadows and whatnot. I’ve managed to squeeze the living juice out of Phoenix on the very low settings for the fighting scenes in SL where 40+ people would run around the sim shooting at each other. Firestorm can’t do that for me.
But I haven’t tried Singularity yet, so might give it a go. Thanks.

    Keth

    April 24, 2013

  • No, Linden Lab is not flipping off Phoenix Viewer. It’s the Firestormers doing it by not updating the viewer. If they would’ve kept updating it it would keep on working like normal, but they made a conscious choice not to. Linden Lab ain’t dumb enough to turn off access to a chunk of its user base.

    Wolfenstein Sequoia

    April 24, 2013

  • But I hear you on the low performance, and it confuses me all to Hades that the Firestormers would deliberately choose to keep a viewer that runs half as well as its other one on the same settings and don’t work at all on way too many people’s high end machines. It ain’t as hard as they say to keep Phoenix updated and the folks who can’t use Firestorm are either quitting Second Life or moving to Cool VL and Singularity. Heck, they even lifted Henri Beauchamp’s mesh coding to import into Phoenix, which kept the viewer alive a lot longer than the programmers wanted. They just don’t want to do it, but their attitude puts off a lot of folks.

    Wolfenstein Sequoia

    April 24, 2013

  • Where did the avatar offset height button go to? As a photographer/filmmaker/model, i would REALLY love to see it under quick prefs again. • Congrats, great job! As one of them who often complained I must admit that the Firestorm Team has done a great job. The Phoenix style interface could not have been done any better.

I’m not yet sure about the resource side. I always had issues with Firestorm due to my outdated hardware. While other viewers (incl. Phoenix) were running smoothly and just good enough on my PC, Firestorm has always been extremely slow and crashed quite often. It’s still slow on my PC but so far, after using it for a few hours, it didn’t crash a single time (a big step compared to the 5+ crashes I had within the same timeframe yesterday with its prior release).

    Continue the good work!

Firestorm has come with more themes for its GUI, as well as far more Windlight themes, than I actually use, and they all take up space on my HDD.
Similarily so, I don’t need nor want voice support. Would love if that was made an optional component.

  • I know you all put a lot fo work into this project, but this release is completely broken. Mutliple clean installs, maunualy removing all settings, downloading more than once, and the thing has a ton of issues, including crashing on start up almost 100% of the time. Camera problems, very slow texture loading….

    dawne

    April 23, 2013

  • Not completely dawne, there are a couple of people it is actually working for. This is a tyro’s guess here but it may be that there are some difficulties your setup is having with the newest release. I have from time to time had things not work for me that worked for others and it often turned out that the issue was limited to me and not “completely broken”.

  • Tried it out this afternoon, no crashes or graphics problems (though I only gave it a limited test run) and I am really pleased with the added features – de-render blacklist, built in posing, and quick snapshot to disc! Though that was freezing the viewer a little longer than it used to in the LL client, back in the days of yore when we actually had that feature (yes, it was taken out) but I had my graphics on ultra so that could have been an issue. Probably still quicker than click-save, click-save. Many thanks to you all for working so hard on this and trying to bring us such a great functioning, stable viewer! It is HIGHLY appreciated =)

    April 23, 2013

  • I remember when display names first came out, there were test regions where one could see and change display name before they were spread in the whole grid. I guess there is something similar with SSB, right?

    Virtualban Alex

  • Go to the Aditi (Beta) grid and search for regions starting with “Sunshine.” Those are the SSB test regions currently.

  • [...] Firestorm Major update 4.4.0.33720 [...]

  • Z offset will not work anymore when SSB code is in place, until LL finds a fix to that bug that SSB introduced (even if i don’t really use that thing lol).
So i do believe firestorm just removed that option till a fix is provided but can be wrong!
Cant understand the justification for not having a windows 64b version, Niran only works with it and for sure keeps giving me more fps and better graphics then any other viewer on SL!
But so far open sim version on v3 mode is working really good, tks a lot, Open sim deserved a great viewer, firestorm is getting closer to be that 1!
Still wish to have the old emerald bouncing boobs available on that version, as open sim does not use the physics lawers!

  • Ugh.I have got to say this viewer upgrade is horrid, everything is rendering slowly from prims, meshes and even textures.Had to wait 20 minutes for the texture on my friend’s avatar to rez.Never had to do that before, usually rezzed right away.

    Akira

    April 23, 2013

  • Akira, go into debug settings and find “UseHTTPBakedTextureFetch”, set it to false. It will fix the issue.

    Jessica Lyon

    April 23, 2013

  • When this new viewer was downloaded and the client started up. If you noticed the message (Clearing Cache). Then that could be the culprit for the slow rez times and loads.

    - If you don’t frequently clear your own cache, this could be why it seems slower. Once you have cached all that you’ve rendered in world, it will be much faster the next time you log in.

*I’m not an expert of any kind, just this sounds like it may be your issue.*

    Cheers. :)

  • I know there is a lot of peeps getting frustrated with the height off set, do you know that you can go to adv>character> character test> allow select character. April 23, 2013

  • Just a question, since it’s a big bugaboo of mine–during the previous release a bug was discovered where music cuts off, especially in sims that have many avis inside (like a club, or a concert). I was wondering if this is a bug that has been fixed in this version? It’s very aggravating when I want to dance or sing along with an SL musician and I can’t hear half the show.

    Dior

    April 24, 2013

  • You can use the Local texture feature.

Temporary texture uploads do not work any more after Linden Lab implements server side appearance (aka server side baking). TPV developers cannot do anything about it. Temp texture uploads will just cease to work.

    Coby Foden

    jesus kron

    April 24, 2013

  • Dear Jesus,
Most users do use Microshite. Just curious, but what have you done regarding getting a 64 bit Linux build put together? Sent some incentive ducats to get someone to devote their free time to it? You can do that you know. You could et together with other Linux users and pony up some cash to get someone to work on your issue. Alternatively you might consider learning how to code and getting on this yourself. Failing all that you might send a polite request. Who knows what sort of flies honey might bring you.
    Encouragingly yours,

  • Official FS 32 bit on x86_64 — for sound you need 32 bit Gstreamer libs installed (check docs for your distib on how to do that), for voice you need 32 bit Vivox libs, you can take them from the official FS release.

I was hoping I could get a little help as I have been having a FPS issue. The previous version of firestorm I averaged 30-40 FPS, 60+ in a fairly empty sim but ever since the last update my Average FPS has dropped dramatically..I am right now getting a mere 11FPS is there a way to increase my FPS without lowering quality?

  • No Height Offset in QuickPrefs? I now have to rt click Avatar, chose Appearance – Edit – Hover??? This is really pathetic. Do LL actually ever_use_their product? Can’t the Firestorm team do anything about this? This is so bad I’m going to revert to the old version of FS.

    Sonja Dominica

    April 25, 2013

  • Nothing to be done. When SSB is turned on, the old height adjustment method goes away along with temp textures. It’s LL’s doing, not the Firestorm devs.

    Crim Mip

    April 25, 2013

  • Sonja Height offset has been broken by LL. The old version will not work with SSB/A and you will need to update to an SSB viewer.

  • I’m sure someone “tried” to make ti all look like the old interface, I just don’t believe they tried very hard at all. ever since emerald you moved past emerald interface, nothing has been as nice or use friendly. I will try again with your video to see if i twill FIX this garbage linden labs has put out which you have followed suit in using. linden labs viewers have been utter crap and an insult to users everywhere and that you as a respected 3rd party programer would use ANY part of their interface is very disappointing in the extreme. their garbage pile of an interface is so clunky, outright ugly and just plain poorly done. I have tried at least 5 other viewers and your was my last hope to make sl playable. I’ll walk away and just e-mail people before I use anything that cant not at the very least work & look like phoenix, if not emerald. firestorm dose NOT cut it.

    Matt

    April 27, 2013

  • Matt…. chill out, man. This is all your opinion, although you present it as the gospel truth. Firestorm may not be paradise on Earth to all, but it seems like you are in the minority with your ranting. There are SO many options in FS, yet you (and those who are hung up on Emerald/Phoenix) still trash it. They tried hard…. and went unpaid. Quit SL and go back to Windows 98 or whatever.

  • Not happy with the release , couple of really useful things are now gone .. I could care less about adding settings to quick preferences, because if I don’t have the preferences I want , it means nothing .. just an example, the height offset ? Not sure who is responsible ,but really ? Was that to hard to do ? D: .. Though I do thank Firestorm team for having their Viewer ready so soon for server side baking, its the only viewer I will use..

    Kali

    May 16, 2013

  • For those who want to know. The ‘autopilot canceled’ message is associated with feature: single click on land. It is a feature that tells that your avatar will move to the spot you click with your mouse. If you don’t use this feature you can turn it off.
You can find it under preferences – move & view. Third line from the bottom you see the text: single click on land and behind it: ‘move to clicked point’.. If you select the ‘no action’ entry from the drop down menu(and press apply or ok), the message will no longer pop up.
While this will suppresses the message, it will also stop you from using this feature.

  • Excellent upgrade to the viewer congrats to all involved, but thanks to Linden Labs messing with things they should have left alone the new Height Offset is pants, you are either in the ground or floating ! The steps allowable in amending the hover distance from ground are way to big. I want my old Height Offset back, it was much finer and way more accurate, and I pity those people who have a non mod shape cos they can’t do anything about floating or sinking. Another LInden blunder.

  • That feature was one of the unfortunate victims of Sever Side Appearance along with z height offset. Worth noting though that both features were third party viewer features and not supported by LL. So it isn’t that they broke them on purpose as much as they didn’t exist in the eyes of LL to begin with.

  • Stable but the program still has issues mainly an issue with random pixel effects on my screen. I have a feeling that this could be an AMD/ ATI issue to which maybe the viewer should be looked at for running with these brands of cards. Other than that its stable but the visual appearance for AMD needs looked into.
