UPDATE: Transcript is up thanks to Inara Pey once again. http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2014/05/20/may-17th-firestorm-meeting-audio-and-transcript/

We’ll be holding our monthly Questions and Answers meeting May 17th at 8AM SLT. That’s today!

We have no major topics for this one so come prepared with questions for us to answer or problems we can help you with.

  • Regarding Boost.
Many Boost features have made it into C++11 standard library. If Boost gives you problems – the best you can do is convince LL to replace as much Boost code with C++11 as possible.

    Mystery Keeper

    May 21, 2014

  • Some boost features have been adopted into C++11, and certainly their standard counterparts are superior to the boost versions (except for std::thread), but some of the more important modules to the viewer have not been adopted (boost.context) and some will never be adopted (boost.wave).

The codebase is also far from being ready for C++11 and LL will likely wait until it’s absolutely necessary for another toolchain update.

(For what it’s worth, boost on osx was fixed a while ago, just nobody asked me about it.)

  • Thank you … for all the hard work, for putting up with the rabid user base, for the new release, and for continuing on as volunteers. Thank you!

  • why is it when i reloaded the new version everything is pink?

    May 31, 2014

  • I’m guessing you have an ATI/AMD card running on very outdated drivers.
    Please see http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/ati?s%5B%5D=pink#the_world_is_pink

  • This release has a serious sound bug…. i hear waterfall and environment sounds from the next sim…. that is.. my parcel is on the south end of the sim and i hear the sounds from the sim north of that… so the sounds travel almost across 2 sims…. quite annoying

    Vanity

    June 6, 2014

  • Yeah, this one is strange. It seems to only affect certain systems and started with the FModEx update.
For details see these bug reports:
Firestorm: http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-12388 – Sound Rolloff Failure
Linden: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-5383 – Sounds heard from across sim

    June 8, 2014

  • Regarding sounds.
    1) Even when voice is set to equal volume, it still depends on distance.
    2) I walked Linden estates and heard a couple talking in one house. But when I zoomed on them – I didn’t see them. The house parcel was hidden. I figure hearing voice from hidden parcel is a major issue.

    Mystery Keeper

    June 8, 2014

  • Hiding avatars on a parcel does not affect voice chat, nor does it affect gesture and object sounds.
Voice and sounds have to be restricted to that parcel seperately.
    Please see: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Managing-your-parcel/ta-p/700113#Section_.6.4

    Whirly Fizzle

    June 8, 2014

  • Hmm, indeed. I had voice restricted to my parcel, and they probably had not.

  • this viewer keeps crashing

  • did something change with the 64bit FS this week, i’m not able to upload mesh anymore, calculate cost just lock up. Was told i needed a havok version but 64bit OS is the only one i can find, also it has been working fine prior to this week

I tried clean install 3 times but this problem remains.

    Vanity

    June 11, 2014

  • We cannot magically change something in the viewer once you have it installed. The only time the viewer changes is from one release to another. 64bit has never been able to use Havok to upload mesh because LL has not supplied a 64bit havok library. If you go to our downloads page we offer 3 versions for windows. A 64bit for SL and opensim. A 32bit for SL and Opensim and a 32bit for SL. The one you want if you are uploading mesh is the 32bit for SL as it contains Havok.

    Jessica Lyon

    June 13, 2014

  • You are probably being hit by this problem: http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-13442

Any viewer that doesnt have havok is susceptible to this. Its a strange intermittant issue. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. It also only affects certain (large?) meshes.
You should use the Havok enabled version of Firestorm to upload mesh if this problem is hitting.
Choose the 32-bit Havok version from http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/downloads

    Whirly Fizzle

    June 13, 2014

  • So my question regarding 64bit os version and mesh upload problem was simply deleted, very matured indeed…. i guess you don’t want users to know about this flaw in your precious viewer 🙁

    Vanity

    June 13, 2014

  • I see both your posts so nothing was deleted. Maybe your issues are deeper than the viewer? Also, this isn’t a tech support forum. If you need help try the inworld Firestorm support group: search for Firestorm support. I use the x64 Firestorm and nothing has changed with mine. It’s working VERY well.

  • Your first post had been automatically flagged as spam by the wordpess spam filter. I unflagged it and approved. Sorry about that.

    Whirly Fizzle

    June 13, 2014

  • Is it truly Vanity or just paranoia. I mean why would they hide it? So they won’t lose all those paying customers? Or so the users won’t run off to the other awesome….what? No other awesome viewr to run off to. Oh wait maybe it’s just that the team who spend so many of their free hours working on this viewer for the benefit of even the most self righteous and quick to accuse tools in the shed just thinks it’s fun to screw with people. Maybe the viewer is just a ploy to keep people distracted from finding out who really shot JFK?

  • Okay, your answer was better lol.

  • One can only wonder at the size of your tin foil hat 😉

  • @Vanity Perhaps you might like the **64 bit Linden Lab Viewer** better. Oh wait, they have not built one yet. faceplams. Maybe you can be kind enough to go down to Linden Lab, and sweet talk the Linden Lab Development team in to writing a 64 bit Linden viewer that will be OpenSourse, so the Firestorm Dev’s can have the libraries they need.

Now that said let me ask you another question. Which do you think is a better place to get the support you need for the viewer, on a web based blog or in world from a Live group dedicated to providing you with the live support you need in world?

If your answer is in world, with a live support group that has a staff of live volunteers handling support topics. Then please kindly redirect your support questions, back to the live in world support group. And let Whirly and others do their jobs and stop tying them up with support issues on this form, which is a less effective place to handle support issues.

Thank you and please kindly have a good day.

  • BREAKING: At this weeks developer meeting it was announced by Ebbe Linden himself that LL is working on a follow up to SecondLife and that none of the “things” from SL will work in this new virtual world. It will also be closed source meaning no third party viewers. Buh-Bye Firestorm! hahahaha

    The Informant

    June 20, 2014

  • I like Firestorm the viewer and I use it but I think Jessica and Ed think they run SL or something. I watch the 3rd party meeting videos and the Firestorm Q&A’s. Sure you have the majority of the userbase on your viewer but I think it has gone to your heads. I hope this knocks Jessica and Ed down a level and I for one am glad it will be closed source. Let the people who run the company and the experience also provide the tools as they think they should be. I seriously hope that LL will not involve any of the FS team or any 3rd party dev in the development of this new platform. Lord knows we dont need anymore “I know better than thou” from Jessica and Ed. That’s all.

    JJ2K

    June 21, 2014

  • JJ2K I don’t think that Jessica or Ed come off as “I know better than thou” They just DO know better than you. That’s why the viewer they work on is the hands down choice of those with a choice. If you know something about a better viewer please let us in on your big secret. On the other hand if you just have some sort of ax to grind perhaps you would be willing to back u your statements and support your opinions with some facts and figures.
As far as the new project, which I am looking forward to exploring, do you or “The Informant” really imagine that all the residents in SL are going to walk away from the relationships they have built , inventory the have, and all the work they have done just becase a new virtual world opens up? If so I think maybe you have been drinking the Evian backwards from the other orifice, evian in reverse is just naive.
Awed by the lack of awesome,
    Georgie
